This car has 2 separate temp sensors, 1 for the computer and 1for the gauge, you need to be sure the engine is not overheating first, but most likely it's a bad coolant temp sensor causing a false reading..

SOURCE: Check Coolant / STOP lights

If the coolant level is low in the expansion bottle then the light will come on and you need to locate the leak. If the bottle is full then the level sensor in the bottle is bad!

SOURCE: VW passat coolant warning light on

There's a level sensor plugged into the bottom of the coolant reservoir. Unplug it and clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. If that doesn't do the trick, replace the sensor.

SOURCE: Shaking engine, weak power, blinking check engine light

You have a bad coil pack, they usually crack from age and heat. It's best to replace them all. Check for a VW recall on this item.

2003 vw 18.t temp lights goes on but temp gauges read normal

If your coolant overflow is bubbling then regardless of what your gauge says you are having overheating issues. If your coolant is missing with no aparent leaks then you need to check your oil for a milky consistency and apearance which would most likely point to a blown head gasket. This would also explain overheating. Hope this helps

Temp. gauge don't move past half on 1996 VW Jetta

Sounds normal. If the gauge moved further over, it would indicate an overheating problem, wouldn't it? Check that engine is at normal operating temperature after it warms up. If it is running too cold, your thermostat might be stuck open.

Coolant/radiator overheating but temp gauge not going past halfway. had check done and not head gasket problem

Replace the collant temperature sensor if the check engine light did not come on . If the check engine light did come then repair, as per code. Good luck and have a good XMASS.

Does the car have a normal oil level on the dipstick? The behavior is consistent with a broken timing belt except for the part about the temperature gauge going to the top which would indicate overheating or a faulty gauge.

My temp gauge is not going and the fans are coming VW golf 2004

Hi, the fans are controlled from the engine ECU. The ECU recieves a signal fron the temperature sender unit which will then switch on the fans. The sender unit also controls the temperature gauge. Have a look at the fuses before you replace the temp sender unit as it might be a blown fuse. Most of the circuits are intergrated and running through different fuses. I hope this helps.

I have a 2002 vw passat. it has white smoke!!

Does the smoke occur all the time? If it is present just after start up and then goes away, it could be no problem at all. There is always some condensation in the exhaust at start up. It is more noticeable in cold weather.

However, if it is there constantly, and you are losing coolant, it could mean there is a headgasket problem. Watch your coolant level and watch your temperature gauge. If the coolant starts disappearing, and the car starts overheating, stop it immediately and get it to an auto repair shop. Driving a car with a bad headgasket can cause major engine damage.

faulty temperature sensor locate it going into the block and replace its located on the block itself usually drivers side or in the front has 1 wire coming out from it ...as far as overheating is concerned does the fan relay kick in and possibly you need the thermostat changed or is there enough radiator coolant in the radiator .
