Belt squeeled for a couple weeks prior to the car all the sudden dying on me when I'm driving. checked to see if the belts were loose, they werent. Changed the alterantor since the battery was dead, figured it wasnt getting a charge. The battery is only a year old. With charging the battery the car will start then sputter out after awhile. Any suggestions?
Belt isnt running true. Bad bearing, pulley or tension.
A squeal is almost ALWAYs a bad tensioner, worn idler, or a worn belt. Read this post to determine which

SOURCE: New battery and alternator - still won't charge
try the battery connectors if you haven't already... sometimes replacing these is all that is needed to get the charge back.
If not.. check out a new starter.
SOURCE: Belt squealing when first started
The squeal when first started is most likely coming from the alternator belt. You need to have the tension of the belt checked to make sure it is properly adjusted. If you had a shop due it have , have them recheck it. Or stop by a local shop and they shouldnt charge you to check it. But its all in how you ask, if you go in and tell them your problem most likely they will try to get you for a fee to diagnose it.Just ask to have them check the belts and make sure there tight. If its ok, has anyone tried to fix your sqeul by spraying anything on it? if so your belt could be slipping from the lube they used. there is one more thing you can try, providing all the pullys/ tensioner pully if equiped are straight. If it is a serpantine belt(flat/multiple grooves) not A v-belt
when the engine is off,you take a tablespoon or so of corn starch, yes the stuff in the yellow box in the kitchen, and put it on the inside oif the belt. Its acts like a dry lube. I learned this trick at the GM dealership, from a factory bu;lliton. good luck

SOURCE: 2003 Lancer ES High pitch squeal and constant squeak
Shortly after replacing the serpentine belt in my lancer, the same thing happened. It is NOT the timing belt. Belts squeal when they slip. If your timing belt slipped it would cause your car to run funny.
have somebody check the belt for wear (or do it yourself), replace if necessary. If it doesn't need replacement, just tighten it.
If you have the 4cyl engine that I have, the tightening is kind of a pain in the ****. Not a great design by mitsubishi. There's a pulley near the front right corner of the engine in front of the alternator. the belt should be running around this pulley GROOVE SIDE OUT. This is the tension pulley.
To tighten:
1) Lightly loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley (slightly loosen, DO NOT REMOVE).
2) Under that pulley there's another bolt. You can see that the bolt goes through a piece of metal
attached to the back of the pulley. Figure out which way you need to turn the bolt to move the
pulley toward the front of the car. (i don't remember if it's right hand thread, or left hand) This
puts extra tension on the belt. You probably don't need much. Over tensioning the belt can
cause pulley bearing failure. If you haven't done this work before, ask someone for
help. It's better to tighten a little bit, a few times rather than overtighten once.
3) Don't forget to ReTighten the bolt in the center of the pulley.
If there's lots of cracks and pieces missing on the ribs or grooves of the belt you should replace it first.
