Thought it was ignition coil. Changed that to a new one but still won"t fire. Checked all fuses. They are good. Someone suggsted the igniter, but I haven't located it yet. The owners manuel says that it is on top of the coil, so would it be part of the one I just put on? Any suggestions as to what else may be the problem?
Yes, maybe the igniter (or ignition control module as it's called on American cars). And no, it would not be sold with the coil. It would have to be a separate purchase. Look around on the firewall, especially on the driver's side, a small black (I think) rectangular piece, a little bigger than a matchbook, with an electrical connector. I just totaled my '87 Celica so I can't go look and check the size and location for you-lol.
Before buying, check for power to the coil on the primary (+) side of the coil, when key is turned to on. If you have battery power there try a new igniter.

This may sound too simple, but first verify that you are getting voltage to the light socket. Use meter on d.c. If you are getting voltage, and your bulb is good, it could be a bad ground. Don't overlook the brake light system goes through the directional signal in the steering column.

try your ignition module in the distributor much more likely. just install rebuilt distributor if that is the problem , if you just replace module the main distributor assem will **** out shortly after.
Make sure you check for broken timing belt also it is one of those two!
