Emission workshop warning

The check engine light came on then the emission workshop warning flashed, then went away. Then about 5 miles later came back on, and went off again. Smelled hot under the hood like some fluid was burning.

Thanks so much but what is red x and where does it go? Sorry, I'm a girl and not familiar with cars at all. I just purchased it used yesterday and it happened today. Just my luck.

The flashing is telling you that the engine is mis-firing, the dealer will run a test to determine the cylinder that is mis-firing, chances are it is something simple

You need the OBD codes checked to be certain of the problem. If engine is running ok with the light on, it may well be an oxygen sensor problem.

SOURCE: Emission Workshop Warning

I had the same problem, took it to the garage and they plugged it in to the diagnostic computer. I had just had alot of work done to it and there were about 8 different problem codes that came up on the computer. The mechanic cleared out all the problems, had me drive the car for a day or so until the light came back on. He hooked up my baby to the computer again and found only one problem. The O2 sensor was bad. The part cost about $200 from VW and $100 labor.  Light has been off since. Being that the light could mean many things you definitely need to have it hooked up to a computer. If there are many alerts on the computer i would suggest doing what my mechanic did so that you're not spending money on someone fishing for the ultimate cause. Hope this helps!

"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off??? After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!

2006 Chevy Aveo Check Engine Light coming on and off

It needs a code scanner hooked up to it,to tell you why the light is on and the cause. If there is an autozone near you take it there or
call different auto part stores to find out if they do that.Without getting the code, it's just guessing what the problem is.
