I have 2003 ford focus 2.0 SOHC SPI. I am not getting a service engine light and the car has a bad missfire. It idles really rough and when you put it in gear it pretty much dies every time. I have replaced the plugs, wires and coil but nothing has changed. I am running out of ideas.
I have a 03 Ford Focus Z1 engine I have had a strange misfire issue after driving car for about 30 mins. the car starts like shorting out the speedometer goes over to the right all the way and the engine stops like its not getting electricity and then starts again and does it again then stops doing that and runs good again for another 30 mins. and does it again?? So I installed new coil pack tail and plug wires and new distributor. Ran fine the 1,st day then started doing it again??So I changed plugs and noticed there was oil in the plug spaces not inside the engine but inside the plug holes? What the heck is this normal or not? I have never seen anything like its before on any car I have worked on? It doesn't burn or use any oil the dipstick shows full for the whole 3000 miles oil changes!?? What is happening ?? A ghost maybe? I am just stumped ? Lol
Just to add, I always check for codes even if the light isn't on. The basics for a rough idle is to check for a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum leak. If you have a maf sensor, with engine off unplug it. then start the vehicle, see if it runs better? If so, check the maf system.
Yup, been there, done that. Found it was a bad injector. Replaced that one injector the test showed and runs great now. Check engine light should be on though because of this problem. The test will show you which cylinder is misfiring and that is the injector you change. My test showed #5 cylinder. The last # in the code read.

you will have to read the diagnostic code that the computer is sendig for the check engine light to activate

The coil pack harness is the largest suspect here. i had the same cylinder and lousy running with it. I fixed mine myself but it wasn't pretty as I had to take the connector apart to do it. I believe ford has a replacement pigtail for the coil pack so if one of the smaller wires is kinked or busted off (like mine was) I'd purchase the new pigtail from them it will be easier than taking it apart yourself as I did. Regardless, my fix has held. __________________

Your IAC may be defective, first check the canister purge valve by removing the large hose off the charcoal canster and plugging the hose with a bolt or something you can fit into it, then try it also check PCV valve and see if it's bad. there are more things to check like fuel filter fuel pump and or fuel strainer if fuel tank but would need to have more information to help.
