When gas pedal is pressed car dies

Have a 1989 chevy cavalier z24 2.8 liter. replaced fuel filter. replaced fuel pump relay. used jump wire to find out if a sensor was bad, but code 12 kept coming on. car idles fine but when gas pedal is pressed car dies

    its a a single point injection system. The car idle well, but shut off when pedal is press. The plugs were check and they were soak with gas. dont know what causes this.

    my 89 z24 idles fine but when i hit the gas it dies i have replased the fulepump -filter-thotle p sencer--map sencer and it still does the same thing

    first is it carborated if so it could be running lean on the mid or high needle it wouldent hurt to get the carb checked

Fuel pump relay is just above the brake booster, change your spark plugs and wires. Check crank sensor. And reset and re scan your car. Code 12. Means ur computer is scanning well. You have to wait . Each code flashes three times. 12 x 3 then all trouble codes x 3 each. Then 12 x 3 again. To conclude scan

Sounds like fuel starvation. 1) change fuel filter. 2) change fuel pump. GM pumps don't hold up to water in the tank (methanol fuel) very well. Its a 2003 so its probably time. Never replace as many parts as you have, without first performing an OBDII scan of the stored fault history, to avoid buying parts you don't need

Cranks but wont start with no spark
Check your fuel pump. It may have died. One way to check is to see if you smell gas at the tail pipe after trying to start it. If you don't, that is a good indicator that the fuel pump ma have died or your fuel filter is clogged.

Yes, there is a Fuel Pump Relay. The Relay is located on the firewall just above the left-hand (even cyclinders) valve cover as viewed from the front of the car. There is also fuel pump test lead attached to the harness at the fuel pump relay. Attach a power wire from the battery to the lead and the fuel pump should come on. If fuel pump comes on, the relay could be bad. Also check the fuel filter located under the passenger side of the truck tucked into the frame rail.

Try replacing the throttle position sensor. I had the same problem in my truck. It would start and run for a bit but as soon as you let off of the pedal, it would die. Try it and see if it works.

If it is fuel injected it will get enough fuel to start but not stay running. I had the same problem with my S10. Turns out the hose that went on to the end of the fuel pump was roted. pull the sending unit and check the hose connections to the pump and the sending unit. If problem presists replace filter first the pump.

Sounds like a fuel pump causing noise. If the noise is still present with the key off then the fuel pump relay is stuck causing the battery to die.
