My '89 Z24 wont accelerate anymore after 20-25mph, why?

It's a '89 Cavalier Z24 2.8L, no check engine light is on, starts fine, idles fine, runs smooth up until about 20-25 mph. Then it just wont go, the engine stays running but it just wont accelerate, my foot is on the gas pedal but nothing. I shift gears to second and it gets worst, I step on the gas pedal and the engine just idles, it will accelerate for a split second but not enough for me to gain any more speed beyond ~25mph. Please help. :(

So far I have checked cylinder compression, all cylinders healthy (120-145 psi). Fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator are working properly. I have noticed the car is running rich and when i was checking the compression I realized one of the spark plugs was completely destroyed, I replaced all the plugs but still runs the same.

I don't think the 20 psi would make a difference, the compression was well above the minimum of 100 psi and maximum allowed variance in compression is 30%, 20 psi is only about 14% difference.

A variance of 20 PSI indicates a problem.

No you are wrong, 20 PSI would cause a rought idle. Been doing this 45 years and learned a little along the line. Good Luck

Idle is fine, its an acceleration problem I am having. But thanks for the feedback.

Then you need to rerun the test.

Have a dealer or garage check your Oxygen (O2) sensor. As a quick fix, try disconnecting and reconnecting your car battery. Sometimes this will reset the check engine light.Good Luck!

SOURCE: IDLE PROBLEM

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

I just fixed my car, it was the spark plug wires leading to the wrong plugs, it runs like a champ now. Just did my first burn-out! :)

SOURCE: '98 S10 4 cyl. 5 speed: Sudden high idle, now surges.

Go to your local shucks or auto zone and they can check any codes behind your check engine light and it's free. It sounds like one of two things a O2 sensor or your mass airflow sensor but they will tell you for sure

Yes, the crank sensor is used both for spark timing and tach/shift switch. Check the connector and wiring first. The sensor is centered on the back of the engine. If that looks OK, put a new sensor in. They only cost $14 at autozone.

I have a 96 cavalier z24. when I start it up the

Autozone and similar stores will check the codes in the computer for free usually. That is the best place to start. Other possibilities are Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (saying the engine is cold when it's not) or excessive fuel pressure (bad regulator or blocked return line)

it sounds to me that the sensor your talking about is the camshaft positioning sensor. It regulates how much fuel you get to your engine, so that is also why you have the fuel smell as well.

97 chevy cavalier z24 2.4L wont start

sounds like a fuel pump. check for the car losing fuel pressure and you probably needed to turn the key a few times on off on to build enough pressure to start it. it wouldn't hurt to check the fuel pressure regulator as well a good throttle body cleaning won't hurt as well.
But worst case scenerio would be a timing chain with too much slack. those motors are known for it.

Have similar problem, seems to be too much pressure build up in the gas tank, when you loosen the gas cap, there is pressurized air comes out. If I leave the cap loose, the car runs fine
