Have you checked the transmission fluid level in park when the engine and transmission are warmed up? Is it full?
Does the fluid look red like it should or look dark brown and smell burned? If it looks and smells obviously burned, that is an indication of internal damage and it will need to be rebuilt.

Otherwise, there may be another problem with this specific transmission that I am unaware of.

shifter needs to be inspected. Its quite possible that The
shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.







There
are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and
suddenly this shifting problem occurred then its shifter
assembly alignment issue.

you need a haynes repair manual with photos show you how to remove shifter knob and shift selector cover usually held in place by clips you have screws to hold gear selector trim plate in place.reason need repair to keep from doing damage to gear selector cover and console.

Saturn Sc1, Sc2, SL1, SL2 Automatic Transmission codes when turning right after a reset or when hitting third gear. Intermittant dash lights dead, fuel pump failure and check engine light says various codes having to do with car starting in gear. Mine had a bad ignition switch which burned up the wires connected to the automatic transmission start satety switch. On the back of the transmission a black plastic device connected to the shifter cable. You must remove the black plastic shield from the upper wire to see if the wires inside are burned on the top connector that has six wires. If they are get a junkyard replacement connector and wires. Replace the ignition switch first to avoid same problem.

You shifter indicator bulb (194 bulb number) has burned out. Pretty easy and cheap fix. The top of the indicator has to be removed/lifted up and teh bulb needs to be replaced.

its your transmission shifter assembly it cost 65$ for the part from dealership and 100$ dollars in labor i just had it done to mine
