Awhile back there was a recall regarding a potential steering problem and dealership replaced the suspect item and adjusted the steering assist. Time has passed and the vehicle now has 45K miles on the odometer and regardless of temperature or weather condition at low speed a bumping sound is heard when turning the steering wheel. This occurs only when turning at low speeds in parking lots, stop signs....any where a sharper than normal turn is made a very low speed. This does not occur a highway speeds and there is no loss or sloppyness in steering. The sound when the steering wheel is turned is like a bump or binding sort of like a round hole and a square peg. Tough one to explain. Also there is no front end vibration or apparent looseness. Suggestions of what to look at?
Make sure that the coupling shaft from the column to the rack is tight at both ends. There is a pinch bolt on the ends. If they are tight try holding the shaft while turning. You will probably feel the clunking noise. If so replace the shaft.

just like the man said, have a clunk at times when turning.this is a 2006 malibu, hydralic.is this a recall and do i need a vin# to verify. also replaced brakes at 40g , with a slight noise from indicator,replaced immediately. the warning indicator was a cheap fabrication of tin foil . no wonder gm dont sell.kitchen sh---- parts
