Does the fuse blow before or after you step on the brake? If it blows only after you step on the brake, and voltage from stop lamp switch only goes to rear brakes and not through multifunction switch. If only one connector at the rear for brake lamps, take connector loose, step on the brake, if the fuse still blows, the problem is before the connector. You could Use new wire from brake switch feed, when brake switch is activated, to the rear brakes. Leave pigtail at both ends, splice in new wire, You could let new wire just lay on the ground, for testing, from brake switch to rear brakes. If the brakes work and doesn't blow the fuse, Make the new wire permanent and route the wire properly. Just my opinion. I don't have wiring diagram for your model year.
Didn't it come with a wiring diagram? If you don't have a wiring diagram for your vehicle, don't do this yourself. You can really screw up things under the dash if you don't know what you're doing.
It all depends on the instructions that come with your brake controller. In 1991, the wiring diagrams published by the manufacturer were not real good at indicating locations of things. For most brake controllers, you only need to use the output side of the brake lamp switch, a direct battery positive circuit (Which would be best to run directly to the battery with an inline fuse), an "ignition" hot wire (which there is probably a connector in the underdash fuse block that is marked "fused Ignition" - there should be one right next to fuse # 14). And the wire that must be run to the back of the vehicle to the trailer connector. It is really very simple and you should not need wiring diagrams to figure it out...just the instructions with your controller.

You can get any wiring diagram for any vehicle. It will cost about $12 and it's well worth it. It will give you the complete diagram bumper to bumper.
Helpful Wiring Information when hard wiring your brake control: Run two wires to the battery: White - Ground Black - Power Blue - Run to Electric Brakes at the Rear Plug Red - Run to cold side of brake switch off of the brake pedal (using a test light to find the cold side) Note: Always wire the red wire to the heaviest gauge wire when testing cold side of brake switch.
I have a 72 amx, the two wire conector at the brake light switch down on the brake pedal is light green and pink and the plastic connector is brown and plugs into the switch at the top of the brake pedal.
