This could be 1 of 2 Things. Either the Transmission needs Service REALLY Badly or you have a Tooth Broken off of the Gears in the Rear End.
SOURCE: transmision shifting problem
Reverse is not sycronized, this means the gears have to stop to mess and not grind, two thing cause this, being to quick to slam into reverse after clutch is depressed, a problem with the clutch.
SOURCE: sudden noise, whining in 1st gear, reverse jerky
Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks, check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid. If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps
SOURCE: transmission grinds when put in reverse and dosn't
Pull the dipstick, engine running in park. If the level is too low or too high, adjust it. But it sounds like your main concern will be the condition of the fluid. Look at it, smell it, feel it. Is it black? Does it smell like burning? Is there shavings in it? If you said yes to any or all of the three, your tranny's fried. Have it rebuilt, replaced or buy a new vehicle, whichever is more cost evective.

Forward clutch went out inside the trans, When you rev the engine, the fluid pressure rises and tries to apply the forward clutch assy. I rebuild these 5R55 trans for this concern a lot. Total rebuild kits with seals, fibers, steels, bands, servo's cost about 275.00 dollars plus the cost of the torque converter. Labor is about 1200 buck. Who ever does this repair for you, ask them for a 3yr/50k warranty. That means the shop really stands behind there rebuilds, as that is the trans warranty I give to my clients.
