100 series toyota cold start problem

Engine will not start when cold - and blows white smoke from the exhaust while cranking, I have cleaned the glow plugs and rail and in doing this got the glow plug sensor light to come on but it still refuses to start until I hook up an auxilliary battery then it fires and runs and is really smelly (Like Fuel) when it starts - runs like a dream when hot - I have recently had an aftermarket turbo fitted and it is blowing oil into the engine ??

If your after market turbo is blowing oil into the engine, best you have it removed. When you say that fuel may be leaking into the cylinders, it could be leaking fuel injectors. If the smoke out of the tail pipe, it's usually indicator of burning coolant. Blue smoke is indicator of fuel and black of oil.

SOURCE: water in oil

I have yet to see a cracked head on a 22R,so more than likely a blown head gasket, unless you overheated and warped the head and worst case a hole between the cylinder wall and water jacket(this is pretty rare). The only way to tell short of using some expensive tools or taking to your local shop is to pull the head and inspect the gasket for leakage wich is generally fairly obvious(separation of the gasket layers, oil and water between water and oil passages)and checking the head deck for warpage. If there is obvious leakage in the gasket you're looking at a top end gasket set if the head is slightly warped you can get away with a thick graphite head gasket,I personally use these as they are very forgiving on slightly warped and scratched head decks and inepensive also, but a severly warped head will require milling at a machine shop or replacement.

X-Trail has white smoke blowing out exhaust pipe when I start up

It's normal for cars to do this in cold weather til the engine warms up a bit. If it's not cold you might have a head gasket going bad causing antifreeze to get into the engine.

My diesel car wont start in zero temps

white sort of smoke when cold and trying to start ,well dont panic and pull engine apart i think you just need new glow plugs thats all ,when its really cold just spray a squirt of easy start ether spray into the air intake whilst someone cranks engine and if it starts straight away then you know you need new glow plugs or the timer relay isnt working ,their is nothing wrong with the engine its just the fact that the glow plugs are down to one out of the four working if not all of them are dead and what you seeing is unburnt fuel as vapour .This is normal what you are seeing if the heater glow plugs are not working as after 40yrs i have seen this quite a lot especially with ricardo type cylinder heads (indirect injection) but you do get it with direct injection as well if the compression is down or the fuel has gelled up but you need temperatures of at least 10c below for this to happen unless the fuel has a antifreeze additive or half a gallon petrol to a tank of diesel will do the same antifreeze trick.

My Toyota Corolla XL 1996 model is belching heavy white smoke. I have just changed the oil and also the spark plug. What do you think is the problem?

white smoke usually indicates the engine is burning oil or its burning coolant. when the engine is cold remove the radiator cap and start the vehicle, if it immediately begins to blow air and or coolant from the radiator you most likely have a blown head gasket, if not then remove the oil cap and feel for air coming out. if it blows kinda like a hair dryer then you most likely have a piston ring issue and you are burning oil. either way you may be looking at major surgery to repair.

I have a 1999 Mitsubshi Galant that blowes white/purple smoke after it has idled. Lets say at a stop light, or for the morning crank up. I am also having to add oil in between oil changes. Is there any...

If you're sure it's "smoke", then it's probably burning oil. But most likley it's water vapor. When an engine is first started and the air is cold, the water vapor in the exhaust will create visible steam. Automotible exhaust primarily consists of carbon dioxide and water vapor. If the engine and exhaust system are cold, the exhaust will be cooler when it comes out and it can create a cloud of water vapor.
However, if it's not water vapor, as I mentioned above, it could be oil smoke. If that's the case you need an engine rebuild since you probably have bad rings.

Heap of white smoke on startup but not always

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up.

Faulty glow plugs or control module can cause white smoke on engine start up.

Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump.

Low compression or air in the fuel system can also be a source of white smoke.
