OBJECTIVE: Get proper Oil Change for 2002 530i...without getting screwed. ISSUE / QUESTION: Does a 2002 530i have an "OIL" microfilter? DILEMMA: FIRST - Called BMW dealership, asked price quote for Oil Change on 2002 530i. Service Representative stated, "$300+ without replacing microfilter, and $500+ with replacing microfilter." SECOND - Then called BMW parts department, in same dealership, and parts representative said, "I have a 2002 530i and there is no "OIL" microfilter for the 2002 530i. When you do an oil change its just oil filter and oil; no 'OIL' microfilter." QUESTION OF THE DAY: Is it the Service Representative or the Parts Representative that doesn't know what he is talking about??? (Is there or is there not an "OIL" microfilter?)
THe microfilter is just the filter. The oil filter is available off the shelf at advance auto parts. It's the original equipment German brand, "Mann". It's about $12.00. The price of $300 you were quoted is more the range for a transmission oil change, not engine oil.
Don't be confused about the word"microfilter". Again, it just means the filter, same as any other car.

If your talking about what would a dealership change, it generally consists of a tune up, including spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil change, pcv valve, and fuel filter. Thats also usually when they want to replace the timing belts. There may be one or two other things specific to BMW, but generally thats what you can expect.
