How do you reset the fuel gauge on a Chevy Suburban?
Press and hold the "Trip/Odo" button. Turn the ignition switch on and hold the "Trip/Odo" switch for about two seconds. Then, release the "Trip/Odo" button, press it again (do this three or four times), and finally hold it for about four to five seconds until the leveling information shows on the Odometer.Jun. 19, 2021

i believe he means how can he fix the fuel gauge not working problem not the running out of gas. since we already know why that happened (didnt know he was out of gas due to broken fuel gauge) theres only a few things it could be. the gauges power source or ground could be corroded or broken, the guage itself is broken or the sending unit is worn out or the wiring is faulty or broken to it.
Hello, this problem is due to a failing stepper motor. The stepper motor is the motor behind the gauge that controls the movement of the needle. When a stepper motor begins to go out it will cause the gauge needle to stick, skip around, stay at zero or max out on the gauge. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the stepper motor with a new one. While replacing one motor it is best to go ahead and replace them all as the others will go out in time as well. Your cluster will have one motor for each gauge. Here's a link to a page showing exactly how to replace a GM stepper motor and where to get the correct parts to do the job! Yes you broke the fuel gauge sending unit in the tank oreven the tankitself as ithas a baffle in it to reduce the slosh of the gas but with it broken loose inside the tank it crashes into the fuel pump and the gauge sending unit and may have broken it completely off.. This is not a job for a clunsly mechanic or someone who hasn't done it before. If you haven't taken a uel tank down drained a fuel tank and put a fuel gauge in and out this is not a good job to be teaching yourself.. Get someone to help you that knows want thier doing or just have someone do the work that does it all the time. There are plenty of mechanics that can do this job saftly and you might not be it. Hire the repair done and if they burn it or blow it at least it did'nt get you.
The windows motor has died, the slider has a loose lock/unlock lever, usually held in place by a small plastic clip. The gas guage has a loose connection, or a bad sending unit. The sending unit is in the gas tank. You can probably fix both doors yourself, but the gauge will most likely require the tank to be removed. I would figure a few hundred to fix it.
