I'm replacing head gaskets on a '95 GM 3100. The graphite gaskets have a thin 'adhesive' line around the bolt holes and the perimeter of the gasket. Does this outlined side face the head or the block?
On most vehicles the watter jacket holes only match up one way, could that be the case with yours?

The gaskets only line up one way with the engine block holes on most of the cars Ive worked on.Whichever way it lines up,if the lines are facing up or down theres the answer.Just make sure all of the water passages line up with the holes on the gaskets.

head gasket materials include copper sheet. exhaust manifold material ( pink ) or none at all except loctite red spread sparsely over the head face
any material used has to be thin (.020" ) as the thicker it is the better chance it will burn out
you may be able to research head gaskets because most engine have a similar design and for example a china made B&S may do the job or a different china made engine may have a gasket that will adapt
check the method of fitting the OEM gasket
check that the head is flat ( may need machining)
do not reuse old head studs ( they stretch and loose tension )
clean out stud holes as they can bottom out on muck and oil and not get the right tension
use a sealant adhesive on the OEM gasket to stick the head back on to resist movement from compression frequency
Sure, depends on what engine, but often these are over-tightened thereby distorting valve cover and creating a leak. If they are cheap thin metal stamped covers they should always be checked and straighten as needed when changing gaskets. I usually use adhesive on gasket to the valve cover, but nothing or maybe thin layer of grease on side to engine. Most torque 5 to 7 or 8 ft lbs, but if you see the gasket swelling out around the bolt areas, that is too tight. Use blue loctite to keep bolts from coming loose.
what you need is a 1/4 in drive ratchet 10 mm socket and a extension if pan is leaking it may not help to tighten the bolts. To replace the gasket takes about 3 hours to do. First jack car up place on stands. remove plastic splash shield at drive belts. Remove the structural collar at rear of engine 4 bolts, and side on front of engine 5 bolts. remove strut rod 3 nuts 2 bolts one brace held on with nuts. now pan can come out. clean off pan and block and install new gasket. A 3/8 drive socket set and ratchet is needed in metric size. If doing gasket drain oil first. I like to let them drain overnight when I can its less messy.
it is very possible to install head gaskets backwards. if installed incorretly you will block oil and water passages .the oil hole is not very large so you will want to make sure they are not clogged by the gasket material
This is caused by a leaking valve cover gasket, you will need to replace it. Instructions
1Pop the hood on the engine compartment and make sure the engine is cool. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent possible shock. Remove the air outlet using a screwdriver. Loosen the PCV hose clamp at the valve cover with the screwdriver and pull the hose from it. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the fuel line at the fuel rail.
2Remove the fuel line clips from the fuel line bracket. Reposition the fuel feed line out of the way of the valve cover. Remove the bolt from the fuel line bracket using a wrench and take the bracket off. Mark the proper location of each of the wires on the ignition coils using the marker and masking tape and then pull them off.

Remove the wiring harness clips from the valve cover. Remove the valve cover bolts using a socket and ratchet. Pull the valve cover away from the cylinder head. Remove the valve cover gasket from the cylinder head. Use the scraper to remove any gasket material that remains. Clean the cylinder head mounting surface using the rags.
4Place a new gasket on the cylinder head. Place the valve cover on the gasket and line it up properly with the cylinder head. Secure the valve cover bolts using the socket and ratchet. Attach the wiring harness clips to the valve cover. Attach the wires to the ignition coils according to the labels you made.
5Place the fuel line bracket in place and tighten the bolt with the wrench. Move the fuel line back into place and attach the fuel line clips to the bracket. Connect the quick connect fitting of the fuel line to the fuel rail. Connect the hose to the PCV valve at the valve cover and tighten the clamp with the screwdriver.
6Connect the air outlet and tighten the clamp with the screwdriver. Connect the battery cable. Start the engine and check the valve cover for leaking around the new gasket.
It is important that you disconnect the battery as instructed. Otherwise, you are not only at risk of electrical shock, but you may also short out and damage other components.
replacing a head gasket is a major repair and really should not be attempted if you dont have adequate knowledge and experince withthe process. That said, the head gasket is sandwiched between the cylinder head and the engine block. It requires removing everything from the top of the motor, then removing the cylinder head itself. The old gasket must be completely scraped off the head and the top of the block and any adhesive removed as well... The new gasket is placed on the top of the block in it correct place. Each side of the gasket must be covered with a thin coat of gasket compound. The place the head on top of the gasket, sandwiching it in between and replace the head bolts and torque them down to the required torque. Replace everything removed from top of motor in reverse order. Keep in mind that in replacing a head gasket, it is entirely possible that your problem may be the head itself instead of the gasket. While the head is off, take it to a machine shop and have them inspect it and if its needs it, have them repair it. Again . this is not a do it yourself job.
VERY EASY! YOU'LL HAVE TO UNBOLT THE VALVE COVER, AND REMOVE IT! CLEN IT COMPLETELY OUT, AND SCRAP OFF ANY LEFT OVER GASKET ON THE COVER! THEN BE SURE THERE IS NO LEFT OVER GASKET ON THE TOP OF THE HEAD THAT IT SITS ON! INSTALL THE NEW GASKET ON THE VALVE COVER USING A GASKET ADHESIVE! THIS WILL HOLE IT IN PLACE WHILE YOU PUT IT BACK ON THE HEAD! MAKE SURE ALL THE BOLT HOLES LINE UP ON THE GASKET TO VALVE COVER, AND PLACE IT BACK ON THE HEAD, THEN TIGHTEN THE BOLTS DOWN EASY FROM THE CENTER, OUT TO THE BACK, THEN TO THE FRONT! START THE CAR, AND CHECK FOR LEAKS! IF NONE-U R DONE! GOOD JOB!!!!!
The waterpump is located on passenger side of the car. Its location if you were standing looking from the passenger side at the engine is at the top right of the engine.There is a pully at the top of the engine that has 4 10mm headed bolts should be a non grooved pully.Loosen the bolts on that pully with the belt on once you loosen these bolts but do not remove them just yet.Using a 3/8 drive ratchet find the belt tensioner and release the belt making sure you remember the belt routing.Typically the the belt routing is printed on a plastic shroud that is just above the waterpump. Once you have removed the belt take out the 4 bolts that you previously loosened.Remove that pully now and the waterpump is right behind that. Sometimes the pully sticks a bit so you may need to put something behind it to gently dislodge it.There are 5 bolts on the waterpump the head of these bolts are 5/16 or 8mm remove the the five bolts using a quarter inch drive ratchet.Once this is done you may need to dislodge the pump.A dead blow hammer works well or a block of wood and a hammer could be used in a pinch.This should not require alot of force.Just a few taps should do it you are just breaking the gasket seal at this point.Now that the old pump is removed the old gasket needs to be removed from the waterpump housing. make sure all old gasket material is removed so the new one will seal properly.Take out the replacement pump and and line the new gasket on the waterpump once you have done this remove the gasket so you can adhere the gasket in place with a thin coat of rtv or weatherstrip adhesive.Now you ready to reverse the process to put it back on.Just make sure to line up the five bolt holes and your ready to go. REMOVE 3 BOLTS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT THREADS.IF BOLTS LOOK OKAY.YOUR BOLTS HOLES HAS DEBRIS OR OIL AND ANTIFREEZE IN THEM.OR YOUR BOLT HOLES IS STRIPPED.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE HEAD TO FIX THE THREAD PROBLEM.IF YOU HAVE NOT MADE THE FINAL TORQUE TO CRUSH AND SEAL HEAD GASKET THE. HEAD GASKET PROBABLY ALRIGHT.YOU HAVE TO LOOSEN HEAD BOLTS IN SEQUENCE BACK OFF A LITTLE AT EACH BOLTS.IF HEAD GASKET LOOK DAMAGE AT BOLT HOLES REPLACE HEAD GASKET.
