My car will hesitate and sputter when accelerating at 40-50mph. The rpm's will bounce between 1500 and 1800 when accelerating and is worse uphill. I do not have a check engine light and the car will not give any codes. The acceleration problem seems to only happen at one pedal position and I have no problems at idle. If I do not accelerate almost to the floor the sputtering and bouncing rpm's will continue for several seconds. I have tried fuel injector cleaner and cleaning the MAF sensor but neither have done anything. Any ideas?

it is possibly the throttle position sensor(tps) malfunctioning. basically the computer or "brain" of the car thinks the throttle is in a different position than it really is and automatically makes adjustments to fuel, air ect.... based on these false readings from the sensor thus causing the engine to react a little different when you expect to have power.

I hate to be negative but there is not a big aftermarket for your car, try googling it, if you get nothing chevy may be the way to go.

If your car is hesitating at 60 km, you may have any of these six problem-causes listed on this handy site link:

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy Cavalier is backfiring and sputtering
Here is a list of some things that can cause it,
Emmissions system not functioning properly,
Faulty secondary ignition system
Fuel injection system in need of adjustment
Vaccum leak at fuel injectors, around intake manifold, or vaccum hoses
Clogged fuel filter
Weak fuel pump
To test for a vaccum leak, get a can of starting fluid, with the engine running, spray around the intake manifold, the vaccum hoses, connections and fittings, where ever you spray and the engine rev's up a little, you found a leak.

Sounds to me that you have an issue with the vacuum. you need to check all lines, make sure none of them are cracked. sensors in the coolant system can get 'gummy', when this occurs the computer will think it is either running colder or hotter than it really is, so maybe have the system flushed. a good way to tell it is a vacuum leak is if when you are cold idle and it is very fast,
ENGINE HESITATES WHILE ACCELERATION
LOSS OF ACCELERATION
It
can be fuel pressure issue or it's the problem with accelerator pedal or its
clogged filters causing there.
