Temperature gauge was not working. Mechanic changed temprature sensor heating/ cooling sensor and temeperature gauge is working but fan is not turning on. Computer diagnostic says temperature is 91 degree, though gauge shows little over 1/2 the way towards up. Fan runs when I disconnect heating/ cooling sensor.
Do you think my computer sensor is bad or ?
There is no computer to turn the fan on. it works on a thermal switch. so you have a relay to the fan. when the temp sensor gets hot it connects the circuit to the relay and then the fan is on. vary simple. and it works when the car is still hot but the key has been turned off till the switch cools off or some have a timer so it does not run for ever. so good guess is the temp sensor for the fan could be bad if the fan is working.

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.

1st thing to do is change the thermostat. It is either missing, or stuck open (you provide good info). This is why the car is not running at operating temp and why you have little heat. The no blower for settings 1-4 probably means a bad switch.

If the fans run when the sensor is unplugged there is nothing wrong with the relays. The computer automatically runs the fans when it recorded no info from the sensor to avoid overheating. The temp sensor is faulty. The ac compressor is not on the same circuit, it is not running because the sensor is unplugged and the computer is not able to determine coolant temp and disables the ac to avoid overheating.

I have replaced the sensor plenty of times to correct this problem. Even when the gauge was working and the check engine light was off. Also I have just unplugged and plugged the sensor and got them to work. Try this first.
