Car does not get hot as i drive it actually cools down when I turn the heat on it goes alll the way to the H. When in idle it goes to the 3/4 mark of the temperature gauge. I heard it could be my water pump, thermostat, hoses, radiator, etc... where do I start from? I had other cars that overheated but this one is doing the opposite!
Indicates a problem viscous fan hub if not electric fans
if electric fans , the following items need checking
fuses ( 2 fuses )
fan relay
fan/s
coolant temperature sensor
over heating when idling ( no road speed ) is a fan not sucking enough air through the radiator
Cooling down when travelling again is a fan as the road speed is doing the job of the fan
Check first your coolant level. Start engine and turn on ac open hood see if cooling fans are running, if fans are running and coolant level is ok temperature should stay normal. If temperature rises squeeze coolant hose, it should be firm like you could feel pressure on the hose a sign that the water pump is good. Thermostat opens only when coolant reach normal operating temperature.

Could be both your water pump and thermostat are faulty. Start with the simple and replace the thermostat and also did the engine over heat while you were stopped or in stop and go traffic, if you were then you may have a blown fuse or bad cooling fan relay that needs to be addressed. Check to make sure your Cooling fan is working, you can test this buy turning on your A/C on full and the fan should come one the same time your A/C clutch activates. If the fan does not function, inspect the electrical system to the cooling fans and replace the thermostat to ensure there will not be any issues in the summer time. Thermostat are know to go bad when they are over heated.
Thank you for using FIxya and good luck

I have had this problem with my 98 aurora and have replaced all the same components. Temp gauge routinely shows 200 on highway (Fine) but in the city in stop and go will get to around 245. I installed a switch to manually turn on the cooling fans by connecting the ground to pin 86 in the relay for the fan(s). Otherwise the fans will not turn on to 245. This fix works but would like to know an actual solution.

I would say you have an air lock in the cooling system and it needs to be bled. Your water pump is cavitating, meaning an air bubble developes around the water pump impellars, an can't circulate the water.

There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck

when engine is cold remove radiator cap and check coolant level, sounds like it is really low and has an air pocket in it.
