The battery is new and the starter is new, but we get no response when turning the key. What should we do or look for next? 2003 325i Bmw. (e46)...I Went to start my car this morning and it would not turn over. All the cars lights, radio, etc still came on and operated as normal but there was no "crank" to the motor...at all. .. I thought it may be the battery getting weak.. I had currently installed an upgraded sound system which obviously will have some ware on battery.I charged the battery for ruffly two hours with a 6amp Charge. Nothing!... so i figured it might have been a flaw with my key fob.... Ive read a few fourms and it leads to the starter. So I will look into that.
You did not mention wether it was an automatic or stick shift.
The wire running to the starter soleniod will run through either the clutch switch or the neutral safety switch to prevent the vehicle from starting in gear. This will be the most likely cause of your problem.
Hope that helps.
Good Luck
Check to see if yo have power by turning on the head lights if you dont then try to jump start if the jum start does not work then yo start looking for other electrical problems, the first place to start wil be to check out all the fuses aind resistors and then if you ca esily acess the starter i will take a positive lead directly to the starter "s" terminal but make sure that the vehicle is in park position and the transmission is in neutral and the parking brakes are firmly applied if the vehicle cranks then turn on the ignition switch and then crank this indicates that the problem is in the ignition \ or neutral switch circuit,
The age of the car leads me to think that the circuit that goes from the key to the starter has gained resistance with age. I would bet if you keep trying that the car will hit after 5 to 10 tries. The only way to fix this is to buy a new ignition switch.
Good luck
Try giving a couple of blow on the starter before removing it.
