I have a 1988 Dodge Caravan, LE. The engine is a 3L V6 and it has an automatic transmission. I believe it is a four speed. The problem I am having is when I shift from neutral or park into gear, forward or reverse, it shifts very abruptly. Once it is in gear and I am driving, it shifts up and down very smoothly. If I go back to neutral at any point, it shifts to forward or reverse abruptly. It does not matter if the transmission is cold or warmed up. The engine idles at around 850rpm in neutral and 800 in gear. It is not a motor mount issue as some have suggested. My feeling is there seems to be too much fluid pressure which is causing it to shift so abruptly. I have always maintained the ******, doing fluid/filter changes and keeping an eye on the fluid level and using the recommended fluid. Is there a pressure regulator in the ****** that could be bad, or is there some other device that has failed? Remember, outside of the problem I have described, I have no issues with the transmission. I also have a ’94 Plymouth Voyager Sport with a 3L V6 and automatic transmission. When I shift from neutral to forward or reverse, it goes into gear very smoothly.

Thank you for your suggestion. The fluid and filter have both been changed on a regular basis, no improvement.
