You may have to reset the engine light. These cars are all computerized. Call the dealership and tell them that you had to replace the gas cap as it was faulty and caused your check engine light to come on. Ask them if they can reset the "computer" or if they can tell you how to do it (if that is possible).

Don't know if that will work, but my dad has been in the car business for over 35 years - I tend to listen to most the things he says......

If I'm not mistaken if no other action is taken to turn the light off, there has to be so many start cycles before that history will clear. You could disconnect the battery for a minute or so and that would clear the history.Of course if the problem is still current the light will remain on.

Turn key to on position (not starting engine). Pump gas pedal three times. Start car. This resets computer and clears the code.

I just bought a 2012 Chevy Impala. The gas cap never tightens. Is this normal?

Some gas caps have a built in slip preventing over tightening, so no engine light, no worry. The cap will feel like a ratchet effect when you tighten, so it slips at point it is sealed so you don't crush rubber seal. Not to worry as I see it.

2006 avalanche tighten gas cap

If the light is on, codes are stored. Get the codes read. You most likely have a leak in the EVAP system that's not caused by the gas cap.

The dash panel on my car keeps telling me to tighten my gas cap,

Assuming you mean the gas cap being replaced, this can also be the result of a vacuum leak. Look around on the engine and see if there are any vacuum hoses related to the fuel system. If your engine has a plastic cover it is under that. Remove the cover. Most are held down by the oil fill tube which generally unscrews, sometimes reverse threaded.

On a 2006 chevy impala it tells you to tighten the gas cap ,then when you do, we shut the car off. Then check engine light comes on. Where is the sensor located.

There is no sensor for a loose gas cap. What is happening is that the evaporative emission system is sensing a "Large Leak". Usually code p0455. The computer sees this as the most probable cause is a loose gas cap depending on several factors it looks at. You would need to clear the code(s) and see if that was the problem. If the light comes back on, then you have a problem in the system that will not let it seal. Possible solenoid problem, leaking hose / line, etc.
