Twice now my '03 Jag X-type 2.5 has had this same issue. First time my husband started said it was a little tough thought was cold after not driving the entire weekend. Got it started, warmed up, pulled out of the driveway and realized forgot his paperwork. Turned car off, as he needed house key, got his things went out and car would not start. Left Jag in driveway and he took other vehicle. I went out started just fine. Drove around the block and the Engine malfunction light came on. Turned car off, went inside and called mechanic. Went back out, started fine, light was gone. Drove to mechanic and they kept the entire day to see if problem would repeat. No Way! Second time, hard start, warmed car up fully, drove to gas station, turned off pumped gas, got in no start. All the bells and whistles, engine sounded like low battery and then shivered like a baby and died. No engine malfunction light this time. Waited 20 minutes for tow truck. Driver could not start at all, no shivering just minor bells and whistles. Driver got to shop off loaded car ( about 20 more minutes) car started no problem for mechanic! This was one month to the day of last time. Last time cost me nothing , this time a tow and 1/4 hour labor. They cleaned the battery terminals and periodically started. The mechanic can not fix a problem that is not there. He said he can plug it in for diagnosis but if the vehicle is starting great will most likely find nothing! He also said jokingly," He would keep it a month and see if he could recreate problem." PLEASE, help! Thankfully both times I was home or close to home! I don't want to get stuck someplace on the side of the road. Am hoping you can give my mechanic a starting point that won't waste his time and my money????????
If fuel filter hasn't been changed lately I would start with that, as well as adding some gasline antifreeze with moisture remover, or "heet" (brand name). do you always re-fuel at same place? Not sure where your at, but you did say, cold, so moisture in your tank, from warm & cold temperatures would definately cause problems similar to what your experiencing. Do you hear any hum from rear of car when you cycle key to on, but not start, if yes, turn it off & back on, 2 or 3 times & listen for same, then try to start & see if it makes a difference. Try the additive first, as I said, but if that doesn't do it, try to get a fuel pressure test done before & after filter change, or ideal would be when it won't start, as we all know, it won't do when mechanic has it. Let's hope filter cures it.

fault codes will reveal a problem ambient air temp or atmospheric pressure sensor(BARO) fault
these units report to the ECM so that the correct air/fuel ratio can be obtained
The same as pulling on the old choke
is your car a diesel? if so the the thing most t make a mistake is to damage the crankshaft sensor or trap the wiring to it to sort this out gas or diesel is to get someone with obd code reader to check the codes thats a clue.sounds like someone has damaged or disturbed something/about to fail
Timing can be tricky on any vehicle. Most times they all show the same characteristics. It's been my experience that when timing is off one of two things will take place. Either the vehicle will turn over and over and over (meaning the engine) but won't start or if it does start in will run really rough instead of smoothly. If your Jag s-type is running roughly it doesn't necessarily mean the timing is off. could be bad spark plugs, wires, coil packs, or could even be a fuel related problem. I would go with the cheapest solution first and if that doesn't fix it I would work my way through the other mentioned issues working toward the more expensive as a last resort.
COULD HAVE BAD FUEL WRONG TYPE FUEL COULD NEED NEW AIR FILTER. DIESEL ENGINE NEEDS AIR TO OPERATE.IF AIR FILTER RESTRICTED.DIESEL ENGINE WONT RUN AND CLOGGED FUEL FILTER CAUSE STARTING PROBLEMS PROBLEMS WITH TURBOCHARGER OR TURBOCHARGER ACTUATOR WOULD CAUSE ENGINE RUN VERY SLOW NO POWER ON TAKE OFF.I SAY PROBLEM IN FUEL SYSTEM OR AIR INTAKE SYSTEM.IF YOU HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL FLASH ON.
Hie kshep05,i'm having the same problem on my x type which i bought last week. it just started doing that yesterday and i am @ my wits end. Have you had a solution or diagnosis for your problem?
I don't know for sure if Jag uses the auto lock feature, as when you move beyond a certain speed it engages the locks for safety. If so there could be an adjustment issue with your cars auto lock feature Just a thought though I had a friend who Ford Taurus did similar thing Yet ot sure how much Ford parts used on Jaguar S Type Good luck To You
SOLUTION for x-type Transmission fault error
I had this very same problem. My 02 x-type would get transmission fault code and then shut down into limp mode. If I turned the key off, shifted gears a few times and waited I could start up again and sometimes drive for several miles before the code came back. GOOD NEWS, I thought maybe the vechicle was overheating the tranny or something like that and then after it cooled down I could drive some more. I discovered that my gas station had switched to the 10% ethanol addative about the same time I started experiencing "strange" mechanical issues. I decided to try switching my gas to the non-ethanol gas from a Phillips 66 station that advertised 100% REAL GAS. The problems mysteriously dissappeared!!!! Remember that you MUST use PREIUM gas as per the MFR. Well the 02 3.0 can't handle the 10%ethenol in it's gas. Something else you can try if you can't find REAL GAS is to use the OCTANE boost from your local auto parts store. Pay close attention to which brand you buy since some can harm your fule system. As a side note; I also own an 04 s-type with a 3.0 under the hood. It looks different from my 3.0 and has no problem running on the ethenol added gasoline. However after the horrible mechanical experience I had with the ethenol in the x-type, I now use 100% real gas in both. I have been transmission fault free for 5 months now.
