... transfer case shift module 2002 Ford Explorer 4 wheel drivenot working ..... I replaced the transfer motor so i think it is the control module.
Fairly common problem on this vehicle , Transfer case has small shift motor at the back . looks like a power windw motor this is usually the problem. replacement unit available aftermarket.
Something you might find handy is a signal tracer (about $40) which can be used in the home or auto. It has 2 components and creates a signal into the wire which allows you to follow that signal down the wire to find the break. (Lowes, Home Depot) Has connectors for fuse panel holders.
You do not want to directly jump 12 volts into the shift motor. The voltage the shift motor receives determines the length the solenoid extends to give you different functions. The 4x4 selector changes the voltage for each function. ONE thing you can check is the light bulb for the 4x4 selector knob. There have been reports on this site that a burned out light bulb can change the voltage for the 4x4 selector. Myself, it seems strange because the lightbulb is off until the headlights, etc. are turned on, so it would make no sense to effect the 4x4 selector during daylight.
Since you have a duplicate shift solenoid you may be able to plug in the wiring harness and ground the extra shift solenoid to aid in diagnosing the problem.
You could loosen up the fuse box holding these particular wires and check them on their backsides. Also check to see if there is a shift selector relay.
4wd shift motor, It is mounted to the transfer case. If it has not been used for a while the windings in the motor usually get stuck. Take a hammer and tap on the shift motor and then try to put you vehicle in 4wd. The shift motor kind of looks like a window motor just a little bigger. Sometimes you have to have someone move the selector as you tap on the motor, BUT BE VERY CAREFUL< DON"T GET YOURSELF RAN OVER> Let me know if this fixes your 4wd. Once you get it going it is always good to put your vehicle in 4wd a few times a year just to keep this 4wd motor going. Good Luck, Roger
SOUND LIKE CLUTCH TO SHIFT MOTOR STUCK. OR FAULTY.CHECK THE 4WD FUSE MAKE SURE ITS GETTING POWER.TO SHIFT MOTOR ELECTROMATIC CLUTCH SO THE CLUTCH CAN UNLOCK.
Depending if it is an ESOF ( electronic Shift on the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift on the fly ) : Checking the fuses is always a good thing, but I have seen a few cases
where the vacuum solenoid on ( by ? ) the front pumpkin is the cause of
this. Usually this is cracked and causing the truck not to lock into 4
hi or 4 lo.
The 4x4 indicator on the cluster will not illuminate
until the motor has turned in the transfer case, and the front shaft
locks in place.
Could be a few other things, but start with the fuses and the vacuum solenoid on the front.
Most likely,it's the 4x4 shift motor on the transfer case, they get water/dirt/ inside.Check all fuses and connector to 4x4 shift motor.Sometimes you can find a used one,but not too often.
