Could be either or, or it could be neither. Is the "red light" a transmission temperature warning light? If so, the fluid is over heating and the heat sensor is turning the light on...Check fluid level and the condition of your fluid...if it's off colored and smells burnt, you better have it flushed, refilled and a new filter installed. Heat will kill a transmission faster than anything.
Check the transmission cooler, most montero's had a cooler installed on the front of the vehicle by the radiator...the cooling fins need to be clean, no bugs or debris so air flows through it. Have your vehicle scanned also, if you had a transmission code the computers memory will probably still have it stored, this will be helpful with further diagnosis.
SOURCE: 2000 Eclipse wont start, fuel in plugs
I hate to be the one to tell you this but if there is fuel, oil, water getting into your plugs than you have bad rings. the vehicle will not start because it is not getting enough compression to do so. If you love the car and would like it to run again it will cost about $1000.00 to have the rings done if not more. But since there is water than fuel getting into your plugs than it is a defenent sign that your rings are bad.

with the battery fully charged try scraping the positive over the terminal on the battery and see if it sparks like a draw is sucking out amps if theres no draw on the battery it wont spark at all (good) if it sparks (bad) you have something grounded and killing your battery.. gl

Try using a fuel treatment. Sometimes water builds up in the lines and makes it hard for the car to start cuz you can't combust something thats frozen... I'd recommend Lucas Fuel Treatment... either that, or maybe new spark plugs, though if the dealer thought they were fine, I don't think that's the case.
SOURCE: mitsubishi eclipse problems. slow takeoff, rough idling, knocking
The rattling can be the exaust pipes hitting the car as the engine shakes. A vacume leak is a possible problem as the car has been worked on alot as the turbo is gone and the system was made to have one I hope you did'nt give much for this problem child as they go wackey and stay that way pretty easy. The check engine light is most likly on when running or it doesn'tr work one. Engine control codes need pulled and if mixture controll cdes are in the list the map senser hose needs checked the timing both ingtion and cam . The control codes could tip you off that the map senser isn't getting vacume and maybe applying an outside vacume sorce to the senser can clue you in to the other problems. ( make the computer think there is good vacume so it'll run smoth enough for you to find the leaks ) Ordinary compression cheak may find low cylinders as burnt valve and wore out engine are posible. These cars when HOTRODED can't last long and the tuner boys pull their money out after they blow em and sell the car as it's done as far as money goes.
