2004 dodge intrepid w/a 2.7. Check engine light came on and the engine started shuttering a mile away from home. Limped her home, and figured it was the cam shaft position sensor. (Had same symptoms in the past with this car) replaced sensor and no luck. Still shutters, and has a real bad gassy odor from tail pipe. No way to scan the check engine light for a code...

looking into seeing if i can get a code reader borrowed or attempt to limp the car into town to have it scanned... Thanks for the input..

Could be the T.P.S. sensor(throttle position sensor). It would be worth the money to have a free scan done by an auto parts store, as there are too many electrical problems that can happen, I.A.C. , M.A.P. and O2 sensors, also check to see if all the spark plugs are getting spark, if a plug isnt firing, then it will stutter lose power and could cause the gas odor because its not burning the fuel in that cylinder before it is exhausted.

SOURCE: 2005 Dodge Stratus ? Camshaft Position Sensor causing problems (I

I had the same problem with my '05 Stratus SXT 2.4 DOHC. I've replaced the cam pos sensor and it seems to be running fine right now. On the Dodge forums a lot of the guys say that you need to replace the crank pos sensor too. I've bought one of those just in case it comes back again. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2000 Dodge Intrepid with PO455 code and stalling.

A code 455 most likely one or more of the following has happened
a loose or bad gas cap
a non-conforming gas cap
other leaks or damage pieces in the evap system

Inspect the evap system for cracks or breaks in lines listen for vacume leaks or strong gas fume smell and fix all lines you find that are damaged ..I know you say you put a new gas cap but make sure it a conforming cap..Hope this helps

Testimonial: "Thank you!! I will def. tell my husband to check it out!! Thats the only code that comes up. So I hope this will help."

SOURCE: I have a 2004 Intrepid and the check engine light

I had a Kia that had the exact same problem. it was because the new fuel tank cap didn't seal correctly even though it seemed to fit fine.

2004 intrepid replaced MAP sensor and cleared codes. about 100 miles later drove to work, 8hrs later started it and engine started intermittently revving at idle and in gear. had to keep heavy on throttle...

TPS wears in spots and can cause intermittent problems like you described. Try turning off the car and unpluging the TPS. Start the car and see if smooths out the idle/reving problem while the TPS is unplugged. If yes replace the TPS.

Is it worth repairing a dodge 2004 Intrepid that may need a transmission solenoid and if that isn't the problem it may be wiring? This is what the Dodge dealer said cost estimate is$1000.00

Depends on mileage, and condition of the car I guess. Everyone says to stay away from 2.7L engine , but I have 98' with 300,000km., or 180,000 miles, that is still on the road, and another 2003' with 170,000 km, or just over 100,000 miles that i just spent $850 on ******, for same thing. Figured here in Canada it would cost me that much just in tax and changeover fees for something newer, and other than that it runs and drives great. Unfortunately, there isn't too many vehicles out there that don't have transmission problems sooner or later, just depends on how long you keep it I guess. Depending on what DTC your getting , which I suspect may be P1776, here is a link to TSB regarding that transmission that was repaired on my 2003'

Driving 2004 intrepid after it was sitting in drivway for 2 weeks. engine light came on, after about a mile, car just died. unable to start. just clicking from starter. lights dim out when trying to start....

Check the alternator,it should read at the battery 13.65 to 14.25 volts with the headlights on,and ac on high blower ,it should not read less than this,if it does the alternator is bad.

2004 Dodge Intrepid Check Engine Light & Bad Fuel Mileage

If it has never had plugs changed, i would suggest it. It can make a big difference.

Labor time is .8 hrs + 6 plugs = $80 - $150.

Take your car to a parts place and they will usually check and clear your light for free.

Firestone likes to up-sell everything, $650 is way too much for a basic tune up.

DODGE INTREPID

They are pretty reliable. Transmissions sometimes have problems and battery changing, etc isnt easy. I have had 2 concordes and 2 intrepids, as well as a van from chrysler and for the most part they are fine except the transmissions. have had to change the transmission in 2 of the cars and the van (which takes a different one). Engines are good if taken care of. Rick

Car shaking/ vibrating...

I WOULD ALMOST BET THAT THE SHAKING OF THE CAR IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THUS ONE PROBLEM. IT COULD BE BAD INJECTOR(S) OR JUST POOR MAINTENENCE. WITH 88K ON IT I THINK IT WOULD BE SOMETHING MINOR. HOPE THIS HELPS. LET ME KNOW. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING AS WELL.

99 intrepid stays in 1st gear.

On the tranny there are input and output speed senors,it sounds like your input speed sensor went bad, this was a very common problem for those cars, and not very expensive to fix. The car is stuck in what they call limp mode.

2004 Intrepid 2.7l needs $1500 in repairs

Listen to your regular mechanic! These engines are a nightmare. If you can trade or sell this now while it is still running, you will be avoiding a downward spiral of very expensive problems.

Google: "chrysler sludge" and have a stiff drink handy.

2004 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 engine, and oil light keeps coming on.

Major issues with the 2.7L motor. design flaw causes oil to hang in the heads and "cook" creating sludge. Sludge builds until the passage to the timing chain is blocked starving the chain and causing near instant failure...this is a "rattling" or Roulette wheel sound. The 2.7L is an "interference" type engine. When the chain breaks or jumps, the cams stop in position thus leaving the valves wherever they may land. The pistons keep on moving though....and kiss whatever valves happen to be open. Bye Bye Motor. Using Synthetic oil EARLY and exclusively cures the sludge issue. Replacing the timing chain and components at interval is crucial...don't wait for it to break or jump!
