We lost the key, and I am trying to remove the ignition to rekey it. I have the lower cover off the steering column but how do I take the upper one off? And on top of that, we bought the can used, it did not have the sensor key am I going to be ok replacing this without redoing the sensor system?
If it didn't have a transponder key, then someone hacked the anti-theft. There are 13 steps to remove the lock cylinder and you need a special tool to release it. Either buy a shop manual or take it to a shop. You're in over your head.
Without the key to turn the barrel into the release position you will probably discover you need to replace the complete steering lock assembly. I am not familiar with your model but that is the way things generally go.
In order to change the lock it isn't unusual to have to remove the complete steering column. Most late model vehicles are equipped with a passive immobiliser system in addition to any other security system fitted. This usually requires the use of a key with a coded transponder embedded that matches the code in the vehicle management system memory.

Is there a light on the dash that says SECURITY anywhere? When the passlock anti theft is triggered or failing, it can lock your key along with causing starting issues.
