1996 Saturn Fan won't work

The fan won't work. I bought a fan that was not made specifically for a Saturn at Advance auto, but the box didn't have any specific wiring instructions. I ran one of the two wires from the fan to my battery, connected another wire from the battery to the 'hot' connection to a toggle switch I bought, connected another wire from the ground connection back to the other wire on the fan. The result: nothing! Obviously, I'm not a mechanic or an electrician. Any suggestions?

First disconnect ground cable from the battery when adding circuits, arcing and explosion hazard is present. You will have to use a relay 20 amp or better to run that fan. The toggle switch (5 amp) will not last long. Run one wire from fan to a good ground (engine block bolt) and the other wire to the function terminal on the relay. Run a fused wire (20 amp fuse, 12 gauge wire) to the battery terminal on the starter, to avoid a bunch of wires connected to the battery . This wire will connect to the remaining function terminal on the.relay. Use your toggle switch to signal the relay. Run one wire from signal terminal on the relay to chassis bolt (14 Ga.) and run one wire (14Ga.) connected to remaining signal terminal on the relay to one terminal on your toggle switch. The remaining terminal on the toggle switch will have a fused wire (5 amp, 14 Ga.) Connected to the same starter terminal you connected earlier. Make sure toggle is in the off position to avoid surprise startup . Is the plug from the original fan present? If so try connecting the new fan there to retain temp control of fan and save you from a lot of wiring. The original plug should be a simple 2 wire crimp or plug connection, provided fan control (relay) for the original fan is working properly. Print this post down for reference while under the hood. Don't blow a head gasket by running engine hot, be careful. Also fan should be on continuous when air conditioning is on .

-Why you want to hook up a switch to the fan...? You want to turn it on when you want?
-No Problem. Here some basic installation.
-Connect the hot wire to the positive (+) battery terminal.
-Connect both left over wire to the switch. Then connect 1 wire from the other side of the switch to ground. you should be good to cool down.

Good lucj

1996 ford probe is overheating, the fan won't come on

You have one of these:

- Blown fan Fusible
- Blown fan Motor
- Water temp sensor is shot

i won't say Blown headgasket or too low coolant level on the system because you have the fan not starting at all. that the root of the problem, do your engine overheats at high speeds? highway?

Relay and fuse diagram for 2001 Saturn SL

In the engine compartment fuse junction box its the fourth relay, you cant miss it, The fan fuse is the big 30 amp fuse. The cooling fan should come on when the air conditioning switch is activated,Your problem you are dealing with is common on Saturn the cooling fan never comes on.And you have to use the air condition system just to turn the fan on.Heres a way to trouble shoot the fan if you cant find the relay for the fan or you found the relay theres is two big relays one is the cooling fan.The other is the air pump ,take the cover off the relay and expose the mechanism, get a non conductive tool a toothpick will work fine collapse the relay so it make contact with the key on engine off make the relay make contact the fan should come on ,if it doesnt and you see spark(little spark)as you close the relay this tell you the power works replace the fan..if the fan comes on swap the relay.

I turned on the ac and the light does not work, the vents are not blowing and the car is running hot. I have a saturn SL 1996

First check the 15 amp HVAC fuse located in the main fuse block inside the car on the passenger side of the center console, under a cover. If the fuse is good, then the problem may either be the HVAC blower switch (which is the fan blower selector switch), the fan blower motor resistor, or the fan blower motor. An auto repair manual will explain and illustrate for you the steps on how to check each of these components.

Even after pushing the ac light switch on, the fan blower selector switch has to be turned on as well (working) because it provides an electrical path to the positive side of the battery to complete the circuit and turn the ac light on. What the ac light switch does is provide the electrical path for the ac compressor clutch to come on through the ac control relay which is controlled by the car's PCM(computer) when you want ac, but the ac light switch still needs to run through the fan blower selector switch to receive its power. You can turn on the fan without the ac light switch because it gets its ground path(negative) from the blower motor. So the blower motor has to work in order to provide a ground path for the fan blower selector switch to be functional. You could have a faulty blower motor which is why no air blows through the vents. The fan blower motor is located inside the car on the passenger side underneath the dash at the bottom end of the glove compartment box. You'll see it. It's right above where a person rests their feet on the floor. Therefore, if your 15 amp HVAC fuse is good, check to see if you have voltage at the blower motor connector. Unclip the connector and with the ignition on and the fan blower switch moved to any one of the first 3 selections, check for voltage using a multimeter. The voltage will vary because there is a blower motor resistor. Voltage should be higher on setting 3 than 1. If you do have voltage at the blower motor connector, check for a faulty blower motor. The auto repair manual will tell you how to do it using jumper wires.

It's normal that your car is running hot because the radiator fan works in conjunction with your ac compressor. If the ac is on, the radiator fan will be on and therefore the engine coolant temperature will stay in it's normal operating range. If the ac is off, the radiator fan will stay off as well and the engine coolant temperature gauge will begin to rise and show pretty hot (especially at idle). It will do this up until a certain degree then the radiator fan should turn on thermostatically and stabilize the temperature. It's scary and I know what your saying because it does that to my car if my ac isn't on. Don't worry it won't overheat.
