98 galant motor stalls - dies when gas is pressed

Got a 98 Galant and got stuck in the mud during deer hunting. During trying to get the car out the engine fuse blown and oxygen sensor broke. Replaced the fuse and sensor - the car starts fine. As soon as the gas is pressed the engine dies. The car will run if you press down on the gas pedal hard but black smoke will come from the exhuast and can only get top speed of 25-30 mph and 4500 rpm (doesn't shift into gear). The car dies if the car come to a stop. When I try to restart the car it doesn't start but if I take the car keys out and insert again it will start!! help ....

It was hooked up to a diagnostic reader and all sensors were working. No error codes!!

Run the engine code tests and post those trouble codes here, until I have that I am guessing.

Check and make sure the air intake hose to the engine is not loose, also remove it and bend it and look for cracks, most of the time these occur on the bottom of the hose. The excess air entering the engine starves the engine for fuel and causes the stall out when the engine rocks back as you apply power..

does cruise light come on when you start the car, during the lamp check stage (during first seconds of starting) If it doesn't then the indicator lamp is probably out.

When we drive the galant it dies when we dont give it gas. only stay started when we use the gas petal.

Sounds like an issue with the idle air control motor.

The idle air control motor keeps the vehicle running when you are not pushing on the gas pedal.

You need to replace the idle air control motor.

Gas milage seems to have dropped.

26 from 28 can be as simple as low air pressure in the tires and outside air temp changes.
