Engine losing power while on freeway

My daughter's 2004 VW Golf has been losing power while she is driving on the freeway. She says it will be going along and then it's like she took her foot off the gas pedal and the car starts slowing down. Then she removes her foot from the gas pedal or pulls off the road and waits a few minutes and then it's okay. She says it's happened both when the car was recently filled up and when it was near empty.

Well, there are some hundreds reasons why the engine can stop. Common ones are:
Dirty fuel filters, problems with electronic distribution, spark plugs to be changed, broken fuel pump, battery contact not in place, blown head gasket, rarely also a problem with anti-theft alarm motor lock can cause same thing.
Generally, if the car motor stopped immediately, with no additional symptoms is likely a problem with distribution ( no spark).
If you have experience in servicing your car you should start from checking if there is spark, and if petrol is being pumped regularly.
Best thing to do is always having it checked by a mechanic.

SOURCE: 2001 VW Diesel Golf TDI. Car started no problem.

the glow plugs only come on when the engine is below a certain temp,so if you drove it to the gas station, chances are it didnt need them.BUT,it could have been just at the temp that the glow plugs werent needed and the engine was still coldish.happens very rarely.wet air is colder than hot air so that would also have an effect.lastly, this engine is known to foul up the injectors with carbon so use redexe/wynns or similar at 1can to 1/2 tank fuel, you WILL feel the difference.......

SOURCE: I have a 2004 VW Passat the engine light came on had it diagnosed the code is P0322 what does it mean and how is it fixed? Thanks

Symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- The engine may be harder to start
- The engine may stumble or stallPossible causes- Ignition/Distributor engine speed sensor harness circuit is open or shorted
- Ignition/Distributor engine speed sensor poor electrical connection
- Faulty Ignition/Distributor engine speed sensor
- Faulty Crankshaft Position sensor
- Low battery charge
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)When is the code detected? The P0322 code is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects no signal.P0322 VOLKSWAGEN DescriptionIgnition failure sensor is used to check whether the spark ignition is occurred correctly or not and also used to tachometer drive. The sensor monitors the voltage difference between a resistance which is on the battery circuit for ignition coil. When the ignition coil works properly, the electric current through the resistance is detected as voltage drop. This is confirmed for every ignition event with the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor. If ECM detects a malfunction, no ignition is possible, so the engine would not start. If there is no ignition signal for a predetermined cycle for one or two ignition coils, an ignition coil circuit failure exists.

Maybe you magnetic wheel sensors are contaminated or need replacing, that's what sends the data to the ECM. A faulty wiring could also cause sporadic occurrences when a problem acts up.

go to the vw dealer and tell the service advisor you want them to "reset basic settings on my transmission". i used to be a tech at a vw dealer and this fixes about 90% of all transmission shifting issues. they will charge you iether .5 or 1.0 hrs labor for this although it only takes about 5 minutes.
