You provided no info on the vehicle motor,so I would assume you may have an Air Idle Solenoid next to the throttle or on the intake manifold, that you can remove & try cleaning or replace.
Make sure it's getting fuel. Try using some ether or starting fluid. If it rumbles to life but doesn't stay running then there's a problem with the fuel delivery system. i.e.... Fuel pump, clogged filter, pressure regulator.... If the ether doesn't change the results you are getting now then it's a fire or sensor problem. Ignition coil, relays, sensors not signaling, PCM... I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out
turn the key foward but do not start engine; then tap the gas peddle 3 times & you should see the oil life reset;turn the key off position;then turn on the car. this should do it
Having a car serviced, is called preventative maintenance, oil, spark plugs, gas filter, brakes & the like
That has nothing to do with diagnosing your concerns
Checked out, is just that. Someone that doesn't know how to diagnose your cars problems
You need to have the problem you are concerned about, actually looked into. That could be time consuming & costly & may even work out better for you at a dealership I would prefer you start with a repair shop as it is cheaper
Bottom line is that no one actually put the effort into finding the cause
A repair shop either doesn't have a data base to learn about your car or the skills to do the job
They are not going to spend time on something, when they can not bill you for a lot of hours, you simply won't spend the money, so they don't fix it
Check to see if you have spark, if you do, and still it does not start, then you may think that fuel is not getting to it. At this point, use some starting fluid and spray it at the throttle opening. That should start it for a few seconds and give you the answer. Joe.
Check the oil pressure switch as it's next to the oil filter. You describe a car that hasn't had the oil changed often enough as the dirty oil is eating things up The switch the oil filter and the engine. The oil filter can leak too. These cars seldom leak if the oils is changed regularly (4 times a years or at least every 5000 miles.
At first blush, it sounds like the distributor cap isn't seated. Since it's happening when the engine is cold and at night, I'm guessing condensation is causing the problem. Try spraying starter fluid on the cap the next time the car doesn't start. This will dispel any condensation. If the car starts, that would be a good place to start.
does it crank over?
