My 1991 Ford Ranger died while I was driving it. It wouldn't restart after I pulled off to the side of the road. It wasn't out of gas, and the battery and starter should be ok because it sounds like it's trying to start when I turn the key, but still no luck. This hasn't happened before with this vehicle, so I have no idea what is wrong. Does anyone know what could cause such a problem?
Ford ignition modules are a common cause for failures like this.
First you should sit quietly and turn the ignition switch to ON (not START) and listen for the fuel pump ( a slight whirring and then it'll stop when the pressure is up).
If the fuel pump is pressurizing the system , maybe you should consider replacement of the fuel filter ( located on frame rail beneath the drivers side door). It could have clogged up and dropped the pressure enough to make your injector not fire properly.
The ignition module is on the distributor (little gray rectangular box with wire harness in it). They go just as you described... perfect one minute... dead the next.

I may have a better way to access the fuel pump. remove the six torx head bolts (size t50) slide the bed back about 2 feet. Ta da! there is the fuel tank & fuel pump right on top. Easy access. Takes about 5 mins.
I solved this problem for me. It was the Fuel Pump!
I took the line off the fuel filter (located on Drivers side frame rail) and turned the key to on, I had no fuel pumping. So I checked to see if the Inertia Switch (under dash in the passenger foot area under the carpet) had triped and it had not so I unpluged it and applyed 12 v power to the fuel pump supply wire (pink with black stripe) and still no fuel pumping. Now I knew it was either the pump itself or a break in the wire to it. So I jacked the truck up and climbed under and was able to unplug the connector in the top of the tank (blind access from the center of the truck and note there is a clip on the far side of the plug that you need to release) and checked continuity in the wire, All was checking out OK. So I had to drop the tank......
Tank removal was straight forward but the old rusted bolts were troublesome ( I removed the front u-joint off the rear driveshaft for better access to the bolts). There is a skid plate that needs to be removed befor you can get to the tank straps. the tank was abou 1/2 full and I used a Jack to lower it instead of syponing it empty. Lower the rear of the tank abot 4 to 5 inces and disconect the fuel lines (simple snap clips) and fuel fill line. The tank is supported in the front over the drive shaft support and you need to lower the rear of the tank while sliding the tank backwards, it hit my axle and I had to wiggle it to get it to drop under the axle. Drag it ot from under the truck so yo can work on the pump.
I did a direct test of the pump and still nothing (confirming that the pump was bad). Pump removes easy by tapping the retaining ring off the tank. 10 minutes later the new pum was installed and and tested. Instalationis simply a reversal of the same.
I also changed the Fuel Filter $10 and Fuel Pump Relay $20 just to cover all my basis and i was up and running again!!
My 1991 Ford Ranger only runs when the parking is on. Once the parking is released, then engine shuts off.

Just this Monday I had a similar situation. Just driving along and it quit. Turns over like crazy, Lots of fuel and Spark is good. I was suspecting fuel pump or relay/inertia switch but I will see what an ignition module will run me and give that a try first. if anyone has had this issue and resolved it let us know what you did.
Same thing here. My son says now the EEC fuse he replaced just blew. So, he has to troubleshoot and big thanks to 74frisky07 for posting a detailed description of steps you went thru to troubleshoot. I am printing this up for him.

im not getting any spark for my 1991 ford ranger. it doesnt fire at all. the last time it did fire it was just at the point at starting but wouldnt. now theres nothing. can anyone help? and what and where would the eec fuse be?
Wsa running , got sluggish. Checked codes. code said ignition module bad changed. no it will not start. changed right side coil pack on the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder. still will not start. cranks over very well. getting fuel. you can hold the sparl plug wire to bare metal and nothing. Checked fuses all good. is their a fusable link?
the 1st thing to do is find out if it has spark and fuel pressure, the tank may have fuel but the pump has to work to pump it to the engine, the fuel pump is in the gas tank.
