I am taking a transmission rebuilding class and my group recently finished rebuilding our transmission and hooked it up to the dyno and it unfortunately failed. It smoked when in fourth gear. the transmission we are working on is a 700r4. My question is where should I start looking first for something we may have assembled improperly. everything shifted fine and the tranny worked great except for the smoking in fourth. the one thing we are hoping for is the during the rebuild we encountered a blackened clutch pack. the teacher said we could ignore it only because this transmission was never going on a vehicle. would a blacked clutch pack cause it to smoke in 4th

Are you sure the TV ( trans shift cable at the throttle valve) cable is correctly adjusted?? Without line pressure readings, I can only guess that the D3/Part throttle check ball is missing, if it is a trans problem
If the TV is correct, I am assuming that the TV cable is pulled tight at WOT.
Did you check the throttle (ACCEL) cable to be sure that the carb goes wide open when your accel pedal is on the floor?? This must be done with someone in the car and a second person looking at the carb. Without doing this, you do not know if you have WOT. Without WOT, the trans will not de-tent and shift down.

Is it missing reverse 2nd and 4th? If so it has a broken reverse reaction shell. They aren't too hard to replace

SOURCE: white smoke from exhaust

Hello;
The white smoke is from coolant entering the combustion chamber(s). Coolant can enter through the water passages sealed bu the head gasket. You have probably blown a head gasket. You should check your coolant level. You may have acracked head if you continue to drive it and overheat. The temp gauge only reads when exposed to coolant, not air. Take out thhe spark plugs and look them over. A white glossy apperance will indicate water in the combustion chamber. You may need to surface the head once you have it removed so that it is flat. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

The drive and reverse gears in my KIA 2013 model will not engage. What can i check? After i finished wash the car, it would not mive.

The low forward gears and reverse operate on the same transmission band/drum/clutch plates group. It may be a solenoid on the outside of the transmission or its electrical wiring or may be an internal issue.

I would check the wiring harnesses, fuses, and relays. If it is not any of them, then it might be time to take it to a transmission shop.

Can automatic transmission with no reverse, 2nd or 4th gear be fixed without rebuild?

Check your transmission fluid level. [I rebuilt a C-4 Ford in a college class. Had a big leak. After I put 9 more quarts of trans fluid in it worked. ] 2 quarts low will make it fail. Be sure and use the correct fluid for your brand and year of car. Big Chain advertised Trans rebuild shops are often a scam. They take apart your trans then want thousands to put it back together. The Federal Trade Commission nailed them for this years ago. Find a local shop recommended by several GOOD mechanics. Dealers are usually good but expensive. Most trans repairs can be done without removing the trans. A good shop can test the trans while mounted in the car. Can hook up test hoses and see what is happening. This was true in 1980s when I took the class. Might have electronic tests now. If it is an older trans the fluid is thick. Putting in new thin fluid will make it worse.
Auto Trans are hydraulic "brain surgery" If you can find a guaranteed rebuilt trans that's a good route. Putting it in takes a lot of skill and a lift. My neighbor tried it in his driveway, it failed and after 2 months took it to a shop. Damaged the pump $$$
[I drive a stick shift with crank up windows. It has 4 / 60 Air Conditioning 4 windows open 60 Miles per hour !!! :) Good Luck

Best to have a complete rebuild. The transmission will need to be torndown to the point that it would not be in your best interest to not rebuild it. They can take it all the way apart and inspect everything. then you will not have any suprises plus you will have a warranty. Partial fixes mean a partial warranty or no warranty.

The transmission has started slipping into neutral and the speedo has started to work intermittently. What is the repair that is required and what is the approximate cost?

some cars their speedometer is hooked up to a little gear box and most are hooked up to the transmission,so wth that being said you need to get a rebuild on your tranny or get a new one.cost on rebuild can be $800 and up.

After shifting into reverse it takes 4-5 seconds before it goes into gear. Reving up the engine seems to make it a little faster. Thanks

If it is an automatic, check your transmission fluid level. If the level is full, inspect the color and odor of the fluid. If it is dark or smells burnt, then it most likely will need a rebuild.

Driving on freeway transmission lost its gearing and wont shift and rolls while in park .

Sounds like it's time for a transmission rebuild. You will need to take this into a Transmission Rebuild Shop, unless you know how to rebuild a transmission. If you haven't done it before, take it to a shop.
