I have a Pontiac G6, 2006. The AC works fine and the fan works on all settings. I just can not get the heater to heat no matter what settings I try. There is plenty of air, just won't get warm. I'm hoping someone can give me a few ideas to try (hopefully from easiest forward..my dad tried to teach me some before he died but we didn't get to the heater.). There is no water leaking from anywhere, which I was told to look for under the dash. And if the first thought is the temp. doors...how do I check this? And is it under my dash? Any help is appreciated.
If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, here is an easy way to see if your heater core is actually plugged or not. It does require that the engine is up to operating temperature, which means you should also be careful not to get burned.
Find where the heater hoses actually pass into the car. They are usually found going into the car behind the engine at the firewall. There should be two black rubber hoses, about 5/8" diameter. With the engine running at operating temperature and the heater on, both hoses should feel pretty hot. If one hose is hot and the other feels cold or lukewarm, the heater core is most likely plugged.
Thermostat needs to be replaced. It opens up at temperature to allow heated coolant to run through the heater core in the dash.
Could be any of the following
1. stuck(open) or missing thermostat
2. plugged heater core
3. (very) low coolant or air in the fluid circuit
I am leaning more towards a stuck thermostat. It can get that way for a number of reasons.
1. age (unlikely for a 5 year old car
2. overheated (warped) and could stay stuck open or closed(more severe)
3. improper installation (it's not fun)
Hope this helps
I had a similar problem in my Dodge Stratus after I backflushed the coolant. It ended up being the heater core was clogged and just needed flushed. The heat has worked fine since and that was about a year ago.
