SOURCE: Smoke from exhaust... toyota rav4 1996
Welcome to FIXYA
There in only 1 thing i can think of where the white smoke is from it could be anitfreeze if so it would mean a cracked head or a bad head gasket if it gets worse then you have a big problem but if you check the water level and it looks fine then you should be ok for a while
if it was black smoke or a real dark gray then it would be oil
i hope this helps you out have a good day

valve seals could be worn out letting oil get into the combustion chamber making that white smoke.if you have alot of miles of miles on your engine it just be time for a rebuild or replacement

Hi entrepreneur,
Was what came out smoke or vapour....Sounds as if you may have been using it on auto and if so just have alook at the LED on the selction button....is it flashing out a code or is it a steady light?....It could be the expansion valve or it may be the electronic control unit....If you have a code that's showing....count the number of flashes it gives....thats the fault code number....Get that info first, so that we can go on from there....

if it is a carburated engine it is probably the a.a.p. diaphragm in the carb. if you remove the air cleaner and look on the side of the carb that is towards the valve cover near the front yow will see a vacuum hose going to a cover that is fastened with 3 screws. if you pull the vacuum line off you will see that there is probably fuel being sucked into the line due to the leaking diaphragm. the vacuum source is temp controlled and cuts off when warm. but when cold sucks fuel directly into the intake. remove the 3 screws to replace the diaphragm, being carefull of the spring. good luck!

most likley its going to be an one of three things if it is a 1MZ-FE engine #1 air flow meter #2 IAC Valve #3 EGR valve hope this helps
i believe the engine is running too lean as if it was running too rich it would blow black smoke If it was blue smoke it is oil related eg valve stem seals, valve guides and or piston rings all of these things will create blue smoke if one of the above is worn out
