Starter, take out and try across battery and it should whirr and jump out as if connecting with flywheel, if no spray the whole starter with WD40 inside and leave overnight. worked for me.

2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser. New battery and starter. The starter motor spins, but does not engage the flywheel. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Either a faulty/incorrect starter solenoid or the starter is the wrong size.
Check by measuring if the dog wheel actually swings out to engage with the fly wheel. Are there any teeth missing/worn on the starter ring gear.

My old starter on a 1999 ford ranger would spin but not engage the engine to start it. Bought a new starter an it does the same thing. What should i check next?

Starter soups but doesn't engage. Clicking sound: you hear it spinning with a click sound before it starts spinning. No grinding sound. The mechanism to engage the fly wheel could be faulty, probably it is seized, or battery doesn't have enough power to make the solenoid fully pull mechanism (check battery amps charge if low. You may need to look at the starter as someone turns the motor over and make sure it's engaging all the way to fly wheel.
Sometimes you may need to Shem or file down where the two bolts go into the starter too get it far enough into the starter casing to get it to engage.

97 dakota ,starter replaced remanufactured starter only spinning, not cranking motor

the problem is that it is making contact in the solenoid housing before the pinion is engaged in the ring gear
have that measurement checked again as the pinion has to be fully extended before the contacts are closed to spin the starter armature

My starter spins but but doesn't engage the fly wheel. Solenoid or starter?

I am having this same problem. Does the starter require a certain amount of voltage to operate properly?

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

Starter stays on with no key on my 99 Avalon

the starter solenoid is staying engaged internal. replace starter solenoid or starter you'll be fine. good-day. If it makes a rattle (clak.clack.clak) before it catches it's just worn teeth on the fly wheel and it goes away. If the starter isn't engaged by the selonoid but it has power it's defective. If that still isn't it it's either the wireing to the starter or the switch itself

New starter installed spins but wont engage ingine

The starter sprocket wheel is thrusted into engaging the flywheel by a big solenoid. That solenoid is integral part of the starter motor. If the starter turn itself but it doesn't turns the engine then either it was incorrectly installed or the thrust solenoid is defective.
Simple test: take out the starter, attach it to a bench, connect to it thew power cables from a battery (the minus one to the body, the plus one to the big connector bolt) then short the big connector bolt to the small one with a screwdriver - the solenoid should activate, the sprocket should be thrusted forward and the motor should start spinning it.
If that doesn't happen then the starter you just bought is defective, replace it. If that happens the starter was incorrectly installed on the engine. Reinstall it correctly.

Sometimes when I turn the key to start, get just a click and after several tries will start up.Battery terminals were pretty dirty, cleaned and replaced both lugs. problem still remains, it happens maybe...

The most common cause of a "No Crank" condition is a bad starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is a large coil that, most often, sits on top of the starter and engages the Bendix drive with the flywheel and sends power to the starter. If the internal coil goes bad, the solenoid won't engage the Bendix or turn the starter on. This condition will not cause any noticeable noise other than the clicking.
