On my 1999 contour built 3/99 I have a clutch like mechanism on the exhaust side of the cam and it isn't in the book nor does anyone I talk to know what it is. I have all the marks lined up and the notches in the cam alined. After turning the motor over several times the exhaust side would be off ever so slightly. It seems like it don't get enough fuel but the pump is pumping the correct amount of pressure. I can keep it running by pushing on the accelerator a little but then the exhaust at the motor got red hot. I am stumped. any help would be aprecated. Thanks Michael
Hello Malachi1962,
Check out the EXHAUST SYSTEM...
If the air/fuel cannot get out... the engine cannot run.

CAUTION
The 2.0L engine is an interference motor. Extending thereplacement interval could lead to the belt breaking and severe andcostly engine damage. Care must be taken if rotating the crankshaft orcamshafts with the belt off, if resistance is felt, do not force themto turn.

you should probably check your fuel pressure between the pump and the fuel bowl. my bet is that is is dropping pressure to zero causeing it to shut off just after it gets running. and there are several things that could cause that but the first to check is a return line valve on the side of the fuel bowl. that when pressure builds up it releases back into the tank and if it gets stuck open you will not have enough fuel pressure to run your truck. mine just did the same thing.

Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the
compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the
camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam
belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal
of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning
the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt
cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that
the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer
on the inner belt cover.
To install:
The spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly.
