240 Volvo - Acceleration Problems

I own a 1991 Volvo 240. I have been noticing a somewhat significant lower response in acceleration while pressing on the gas pedal in the last few days. I had a greater issue today after starting the car and pushing on the gas pedal while driving. This time the car did not accelerate until I put large amount of pressure on the gas pedal. When I did this the engine very slowly accelerated and reved until it kicked violently into acceleration. After that the car did not go back to normal and requires more pressure on the gas pedal to accelerate. I have tried words of encouragement and loving prose but I think it is going to need more that that. Any suggestions of what might be going on would be greatly appreciated!

Perhaps the Carburettor just needs a clean of all the soot and old oil build up. Go to a motor factors or ebay and get some Carb cleaner.
Find Two pieces of old rags.
And an old chisel or wide screwdriver.
With the car engine OFF.
Undo the air pipe attached to the side of the Carb. Get a small piece of rag and open the vent fin carefully . Put a piece of rag just to top anything going down into the inside of the Carb.
Spray some carb cleaner around the inside circle and clean the excess build up of oil . Remove the rag and rap a bit of it around the head of the chisel or screwdriver.
Open the fin carefully again ...
Spray some carb cleaner in one side and whilst holding the fin open with your finger start wiping the inside with the rag on the chisel . Wipe as much of the excess oil build up as you can safely do until the inside if the carb is clear as possible.
Give it another spray with the carb cleaner .
Start your engine up and give it a bit of throttle.
Knock the engine off again and replace the Air pipe securely.
Every few fill ups of fuel put in some Petrol Cleaner .

This did my wife's S40 really good.

One fuel pump may have died. Either the in-tank pump or the in-line pump which is below the left rear passenger floorboard. I would test power to in-line pump first. You can start engine and have a friend lay down by the in-line pump and listen for it to churn/buzz/hum.

Sounds like fuel starvation. Would suggest cleaning any filters in the fuel line or replacing.
Also check the stop idle valve. This should be inline in the air intake pipe to the intake manifold..
Remove it and clean with WD40.Make sure you note the orientation of the spring.
To reset the ECU disconnect the battery for 5 minute the reconnect. The ECU should reset to factory settings. Make sure you know radio and alarm codes!
Try petrol additive STP or Redex to clean inside the engine.
Thats as far as my knowledge goes, hope it helps.

SOURCE: Vehicle hesitates when you accelerate .

make sure you have the correct spark plugs(2)check the throttle position sensor on the car,as most people would be driving about with the throttle on the floor car feels fine.but as in normal driving anyone only uses the first half of the pedal and this is where most wear takes place and sometimes causes hesitation when driving.best of luck.

1991 Volvo 240 bucks like a bronco and doesn't want to start.

I had the same problem w/ my 1979 242 GT.....Try looking at the fuel pump inside the gas tank (go in from the top under the mat in the trunk).....I had a broken hose that was connecting the fuel line from the in-tank fuel pump....or try cleaning or replacing the filter sock located there too & make sure the filter sock is at its proper height ! and check on the fuel pump itself....My bucking problem was more noticeable when the fuel level was low.

Try the vaccume control module on the transmission. That is the likely culprit.

My volvo 240 DL Station Wagon (a 1987) idles high, and there is a frequent delay in acceleration when I press the gas. These issues MAY be unrelated to one another, as my car has well over 200k miles on...

I tink you have to replace the catalyst for better acceleration probably is blocking the combustion that's what you loosing power, I have 240 wagon 92 and i just did it. my 184k miles good luck.

Acceleration

Chevron 91 octane with Techron works well.  I just did an 8000-mile cross country run with good results (responsiveness, acceleration, idle)
