what you need is the firing order. that is located on the intake of the vechile right in front of the throttle body. it starts at 1-8 then i forget the rest off hand. that number tells you what plug gets spark first. now, on your motor, the cylinders are numbered as such. front of motor drivers side to rear is 1,3,5,and 7. Passanger side front to rear is 2,4,6, and 8. Match up the cylinder and wire with the distrubitor starting at 1, then 8, then so on and so on using your firing order. I found a pic online for you.
http://www.classiccarauto.com/impala/how_to/images/distributor.png As you see in the pic it starts off with number 1 in the 6:30 position. I find that if you start in the 4:30 position it's almost dead on. But that's up to you. Hope this helps.
