This problem just started yesterday Apr 23, 2012. I drove the truck Sunday night and everything was fine. Monday morning all my cluster lights were on with ignition switch off. The truck started fine. Drove to work and noticed the speedometer was not working.. Arrived at work; shut the truck off and lights came on again and all guages were reading . Changed the ignition switch and cured the light and guage problem. The speedometer is still not working. Any ideas?
SOURCE: electrical problem
I finally broke down and took my truck to the dealer. It took them two tries, but they finally figured it out. It turned out to be the wiring harnes for the shift lever. When it exits the steering column, it was being chafed, and eventually wore through a wire and was intermittently shorting. It would blow a fuse (don't remember which one - I think it was on the bottom row, third in from the right. 20A). It stopped the alternator from charging too. They replaced the shifter harness and the problem went away. I did get a ticket while my speedo was inop however.

You better check the connector to the speedo and cluster, either you bent a pin or damaged the printed circuit, or the connector is not locked properly.

FROM LustyKid:
You have to remove the dash panel be careful you don't break the string for the shift indicator which slides on and off. You will need to bring the shifter (column one) to the low position so you can pull out the dash. Lots of screws different sizes, don't interchange them. Don't over tighten them either, you crack the plastic in the dash panel and strip them. Good luck

If you don't have any electric functions working I would have to say that the battery is dead. Where the lights left on last night or a door open? You can take the battery out and take it to your local auto parts store and they can test it for you to make sure it's not dead and if it's not, then you can have them charge it for you. Let me know if you need anything else.

Sending unit should be in this location. This is a cheap part that likes to fail.
