You may have to adjust the latch a little so the light will go off, if it doesn't, the switch may be bad.

There are several possibilities...do you have the light switch turned all the over for the interior lights? Is the switch at the liftgate broken so that the plunger does not go in to turn it off? There might be a short to ground at the switch if the hot is run to the light and the switch does the grounding?

The lift gate activates a contact. This contact must be integrated in the frame of the lift gate. The contact does not switch.
Either it has to be adjusted (mechanical in right position) or it is defective, then you have to replace it.

Usually a faulty sensor in the door latch.

Detrim the lift gate and replace the latch mounted switch.

Is there perhaps a problem with the dome light switch on the lift gate? Close all the doors, open only the lift gate and find the switch on the lift gate frame (usually a rubber covered "bump") and press it in. You might have a loose wire shorting against the bodywork or the door is not depressing the switch properly.

In this case it is usually necessary to remove the interior panels of the liftgate to gain access to the linkage inside. The only problem is: removal of those panels is much more difficult with the liftgate closed. Take to a professional, or risk breaking the attachment points of your panels, and associated fasteners. I usually charge around 50 to 100 dollars to get these open, then an additional charge for further work to repair the lock, latch, or linkage.

Check all the fuses under the hood and under the dash. Then try having someone wiggle the liftgate while you "tap" the down button repeatedly. Do not apply too much force to the liftgate.
