2001 Honda Accord EX manual transmission, 143,000 miles. New radiator, hoses. Check engine light just came on suddenly and car began to idle roughly, shaking at stops. Help! Is it safe to drive to mechanic or do I need it towed? Mechanic is 20 miles away, up highway (near work).
If it's running rough, chances are that it's misfiring. If the Check Engine light is flashing/blinking, it is definitely misfiring.
If that's the case, drive it as little as possible... Or straight to the mechanic because the more you drive it while it's misfiring, the higher the chance is of you ruining your catalytic converter.

Have computer diag. done, your computer pick up a bad reading from one of your engine sensor's. Autozone can do this for free, but don't buy any thing till you have it check at a repair shop.Just have them get the code that's stored in your computer and have it check out.

Some major parts stores offer free code reading. Call your local parts store and ask. Remember that codes give general information that there is a problem with an engine function, so whatever function the code reveals a problem with, can be a number of different things that could be wrong. It is a starting point on your search for the actual problem. So if you know what code # is causing the check engine light to illuminate, you still have to determine what is wrong by checking all the components of that system. It would be a great help to pick up a repair manual for your accord, good luck, God Bless, countrycurt0

If all the connection and power supplies to instrument cluster are ok,I suspect that the speedometer or instrument cluster is faulty but before you replace it, make sure the gear inside the transmission that drives the VSS is in good.

Horsecrap...go to an independent transmission dealer after you call the extended warranty folks and complain!
I can count the number of Honda transmissions that go bad before 300,000 miles on one hand.
Good Luck
