I have a 325ci with automatic transmission. It runs perfectly, both engine and transmission (does not feel that it has 147,000 miles). BUT, when driving at constant speed, with trani in Drive position, at about 40 MPH and engine at about 2000 RPM, after 0.5 miles or longer, the car begins to rattle / vibrate for 2 seconds, goes away, comes back, goes away, comes back. I placed the the trani in Sport Drive, and the rattle / vibration comes on at 50 MPH and 2000 RPM. Again, it runs like new, outside of these matching conditions (2000 RPM, 40-50 mph). ANY IDEEAS???????????????
SOURCE: steering wheel starts to vibrate at 55 mph
i would suspect somewhere in your front end you have a compliance bushing with excessive movement. these cars front ends depend heavily on these style bushings, and as they wear you can start to see tire wear patterns, looseness in steering, and high speed vibration. make sure you have the front end inspected by a shop that is familier with these types of cars. good luck!
