Could be any number of things. Bad coil or weak spark, low fuel pressure or clogged fuel filter. A breakdown of the ignition subsystems equivalent to points and firing sensors.

You should check EGR by very temporarily plugging vacuum line and see if performance is changed. Sometimes blocked exhaust Catalytics or collapsed muffler baffles will plug up the exhaust and require too much push to clear the pipes.

SOURCE: Engine shakes and can not accelerate as quick when starts

If the engine light is on, a code scanner needs to be connected to it to find out why the light is on. It could be one of the sensors causing it. Take to autozone or advanced auto if there is one near you, if not call a repair shop that can do it. Autozone and advanced don't charge. Takes about 30 seconds.

Do you have a check engine light blinking when this problem occurs? I assume you do because if it is missing and sputtering like you say the engine control computer would detect that and turn on the check engine light. Next step is to have the systems fault codes read through the diagnostic port under the dash in front of the driver, Autozone and others does this test for free.

2005 545i bmw sputtering at 40 miles per hour

So, here's what you have to do - it's a frikkin tranny reset!!

Drive in manual mode M5 for 5 minutes at over 60MPH, then switch it to M6 for 1 minute, then back to M5 for 2 minutes, then back to auto.
Note: the car is going to sputter continuously when you have it on M5 for the 5 minutes.

That was it - drove around for 30 minutes afterwards and no issues what so ever!! Unbelievable!!!

While driving when I try to accelerate after 30 miles per hour my car pulsates before picking speed. The car seems like loses speed before it pickup speed.

It's hard to say if this is something more dire than this, but have your spark plugs and wires checked out.

If a cylinder is not igniting properly when you accelerate, it would definitely cause this problem.

I had a car where it would 'jump' when I was trying to accelerate past 30-40mph and switching the wires fixed it right up. Hope this helps!

My prelude wiil not accelerate past 30 to 40 miles per hour, starts fine, idles fine run fine beloww about 30 or 40 mikles per hour, does not really miss but will not accelerat past 30 or 40

Generally the symptoms say the catalytic converter is clogged, you can't get any air out so you can't pull any air in, and the age of the vehicle says so too. Look and see if it has ever been replaced.

Won't accelerate past 40 miles per hour

these jeeps did have a small problem with the tp sensor. i would also have the back pressure of the exhaust checked to see if you have a catalytic converter choked up.
