Sounds like you have a broken or disconnected shift cable. There are two cable attaching at different angles.Either disconnected at trans or below shifter.
I have a 1998 and I just confronted the same problem. It seems to take like 1 gear in reserve and like 2 gear in 1 gear. Any thoughts? I don't really it should be the transmission since it still works going forward in 2 different gears. Thanks.
Had a similar problem with same model pickup but would shift into third only after reaching high RPM in second @5000. There was TSB that came out about this a few years ago. I had to replace the valve body in the transmission to fix the problem and worked perfectly after that. Hope this helps!
let it warm up for 10 minutes before you put it into drive if it goes rite in then you need to change the transmition filter in it i had 2 chevys do that it will go rite int reverse gear but wont go into drive rite away after the engine runs for a while it shuld go into drive
