I have 98 Saturn sl2. The cruise control works intermittently. I set the cruise and it will engage for about 20 to 30 seconds before disengaging. Sometimes it won't engage at all unless I repeatedly hit the set button. I have replaced the cruise control module and it still does this. When it is working during the 30 seconds, I hit the break and the cruise disengages. Same when I press the clutch in, the cruise disengages. So, I disconnected the clutch switch and it still does this. I have disconnected the break switch then it doesn't work at all. Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Testing the electrical inputs to the control module from the switch . Testing power an ground circuits to the switch . As a professional technician this is how i go about find what is wrong ! Not just replacing parts , that gets expensive. Do you know what a wiring diagram is ,an how to use one to pin point areas to do testing ? Here is a site for free wiring diagrams . http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter your vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size . SOURCE: '98 SL2 Saturn Traction Control

Traction control helps limit tire slip in acceleration on slippery surfaces. In the past you had to feather the gas pedal to prevent the drive wheels from spinning wildly on slippery pavement. Many of today's vehicles employ electronic controls to limit power delivery for the driver, eliminating wheel slip and helping the driver accelerate under control. Don't turn it off.

SOURCE: 1998 saturn manual transmission will not engage in any gear

Well, there is one thing for sure the trany is damaged. You will be further ahead looking for another junk yard trany rather than worry about what is going on inside since there is probably parts and pieces inside that would still give you trouble without completely overhauling it, plus a junk yard trany, standard would be easy to come by.

SOURCE: Replacing the clutch on a 1998 Saturn SL1

It is very difficult for you to disengage the clutch by hand or with any leverage you can get outside the transmission. There is over 200 lbs of force clamping on the clutch disc.

If you replaced the clutch and took the slave cylinder out of the transmission without putting a brick under the clutch pedal or disconnecting the pivot arm from the pedal then you ruined the hydraulics. Buy a new PRE-BLED system from a local auto store. Generally this is the problem.

Either that or the clutch fork is bent or you installed the throwout bearing backwards (or simply fell off the fork which is not all that uncommon).

My cruise button works & it lets me set it. Without braking, it disengages. The "possible fix" was to get a new brake light switch. It didn't fix my problem. Anybody have an ideas?? Thx. Mel

cruise controls need fully functional units to stay engaged
they include
brake sensor ,
clutch sensor ,
VSS ,
tachometer
cruise switch
if any one has a problem it will disengage
also it only works above a certain road speed or engine rpms

Intermittent Cruise Control Issue - cuts out when small bump in road is hit and may or may not re-engage after that.

Check the wire connector that plugs into the cruise control under the hood. Sounds like a loose connection. Remove the and reinsert the wire connector several times to make a better connection. Stepping on the brake pedal disengages the cruise control by a switch on the brake pedal, not the computer.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Most cruise controls are vacuum actuated. check for vacuum leaks. This also occurs at the brake petal where cruise is disengaged, check for proper adjustment on the cruise switch.

Cruise control notworking on a 2002 F150

cruise controls are controlled by the following switches and sensors
1 the switch itself
2-- the clutch pedal sensor or the VSS in the auto transmission
3 the brake sensor ---4-- the gear change switch or selector
5-- the engine speed sensor ( tacho)
6-- the road speed (VSS )
if 1 or a combination is not working or is outside parameters , the cruise control will not switch on
the road speed in a manual is set at around 20 mph and any less will not engage cruise control(CC)
changing gears in a manual will disengage CC
touching the clutch pedal will not allow engagement or will disengage CC
for some sensors run the fault codes

I'm getting this code p0582 on Mar 19 2009 you sad you did not no what it was. Do you know now? there no more codes. Cruise Control Related Malfunction i tern on the Cruise Control. Light comes on I set...

P0582 is the Chrysler Diagnostic Trouble Code (Error Code) for:

Speed control vacuum or vent solenoid circuits open or shorted

If you do not have cruise control on your vehicle, you can ignore this code. If you do, you've probably noticed it is no longer working or only works intermittently. The code is saying it's an electrical problem to the servo.
