2002 gmc envoy front suspension noise

When I drive over bumps I get clucking noise in the front end, steering, suspension or chassis.

    Its a friends car.

The noise has been going on for 3 months.

It has been getting louder over time.

Mostly driving strait over bumps, bumpy dirt roads or while turning over a bump (like into a drivway).

    Just normal driving.

    4wd.

No recent work has been done on the car.

    65,000 miles.

It sounds like upper control arm bushings or something is loose in the steering or suspension.

  • kathoid Nov 15, 2008

The strutes are good, and I have checked for loose mountings and bolts.

  • kathoid Nov 15, 2008

Is there a web site that will show me how to replace the bushings in the steering and or suspension on this front end.

  • kathoid Nov 16, 2008

I do have a very well equipped shop at home. I'm 57 years old and have been a dealership mechanic for 10 years and then owned my own shop for 5 years. Then I fell off a second floor balcony and now I just work out of my home shop. I did do the jump on the bumper test. I have done lots of front end work, but this just doesn't sound like a shock or strut. It sounds like when the sway bar bushings are bad and when this sounds off it is a troublesome noise. The steering in normal driving conditions feels very good... except over a pot hole type of bump or a several bumps in a row. I'm going to jack up the car up on all four corners with 4 jack stands, pull the divers tire off then take the load off the frount spring and see what I can find.

    Thanks for your help

My envoy does the same thing. Everytime i take a right hand turn i can hear and feel a loud popping noise coming from under the passenger floor. Could it be the rubber mount being worn out up where the strut bolts down?

How long have you had the vehicle?

    Did this noise just start?

Or has it been getting progressively louder over time?

Does it happen more turning, or ?

Has the vehicle recently been driven differently then normal (like taken off road etc)?

    2WD or 4WD or AWD?

Has any work been done to the vehicle recently?

How many miles on the vehicle?

All of these items can play into what could be the problem, or what could be causing the problem.

All of the vehicles systems interact with each other, so determining the cause can be multi part. I wish it was just "If it's problem A do Step 35 to fix it". It's not quite that simple.

Any additional information you can provide with be helpful.

The clunking or rattle sound is actually coming from the end links on the anti sway bar. You won't hear it on the bumper test. Good luck.

Thanks for providing that information.
At 65K I would first suggest changing shocks. Yes, that is enough mileage to have them beginning to get "softer" which will increase suspension travel and noise.
Even though they may test good (usual test is jumping on the bumper to see how it responds after bouncing) but that really doesn't apply to shock/strut combinations.
I would suggest a higher then factory grade replacement shock. Do realize 60% of the weight for that vehicle is in the front.
Next, there is always some, what they call "spring seating" as a vehicle gets older. You will notice it more when the suspension is in a turn, going over a bump. The spring moves / rotates in the seat, and you will hear a sometimes loud popping or clicking noise.
Bushings are probably best left to the professionals, unless you happen to have a well equipped shop at home.Same goes for the struts. You will need a good spring compressor to be able to change them, and you will need to have an alignment done after changing them. Doing the bushings at the same time is easy once the struts are out.

Since it is 4WD you mine want to test the front CV joints also. If you have access to a lift, put it in the air so all 4 wheels are off the ground, and running it. Listen to each front wheel to see if you can hear any CV noise. Please be very careful doing this. Doing it incorrectly can result in injury.

What you want to do more then anything is take this a step at a time. When you hear a noise inside a car, it can sound like it is coming from one place, and you can find out later, it is somewhere else.

I think a Haynes manual is going to be a good guide for you on this problem.
Take you time, and be very careful doing this kind of work. If at anytime you are not 100% comfortable doing the work, consult a professional.
Sorry I can't be more help as a simple fix, but I'm limited diagnosing any further without have the vehicle at my access.

you may have a bad shock absorber or broken strut. check all your suspension for obvious damage. or if the bottom of the shock absorber looks wet.

Shock suspension

Could be the exhaust system hitting on something when the suspension moves. Inspect under the car and look for shiny spots that are making contact.

My wife drives a 2003 GMC Envoy and has been complaining about this same creaking noise upon breaking or going over speed humps. I researched this topic on the internet high and low and tried everything I read to no avail. I was about to give up and then realized it could be the motor mounts since when you break or go over bumps the engine does have some movement. Sprayed the most interesting looking motor mounts I've ever seen with silicone spray and the noise was gone! My wife has been complaining for years about this noise and now looking back what a simple solution!. By the way my motor mounts where not worn out, the rubber portion of the mount just needed a little lube.

2004 GMC ENVOY Steering wheel shaking, could this be the ball joints or alignment? I know it needs an alignment, because the toe is out.

Shaking of the front wheels indicates either an out of balance condition of one of the tires or a suspension component having too much play (such as ball joints). Have a front end shop check this out before a more serious condition occurs.
