Sounds as if you have blown a fusible link. Don't know Fords that well, but usually these are inside the several hot wires going to the battery +, or the starter main +.
They usually come together when you buy a new starter. You can purchase them seperately ...but its like having a cavity cleaned out and not covering it with a filling.
What are you saying you dont have enough room? if that is the case than you have to lift the motor out a little bit just take out the motor mount and jack it up
check the ignition module...it is located on steering column. you will be able to tell if it is bad as it will be separated and if you push it back together it will start.
