Front end noise on gmc sierra 1/2 ton pickup 4 wheel drive.

Truck seems to have a noise in the left front end only while turning, breaking, and driving over normal road bumps. If driving on smoth surfaces no noise is apparent.
No rough service on this vehicle, no hauling or plowing just normal driving and towing of Camper, never hit a curb or had an accident. Is this the norm for this vehicle. Searched the web for similar problems. no history.
I will be rotating tire soon. Will check upper and lower ball joint, stabilizers and shocks. Any suggestions? Another owner of the same model year had an issue with the steering box on his truck. This like my issue could be related or just an isolated incident. Where do suggest I go to find similar such issues with 2005 GMC 1/2 ton pickup? I've been a truck owner for years and never had an front end issue on a vechicle with such low mileage. Of course anything is possible with the way GMC designs new trucks.

I have the same issue. Just started on my 2006 GMC Sierra Denali truck. Low miles also. Like to know what anyone knows.

My 05 GMC 1500 4x4 has a knocking/rattling noise in the front when turning...tracked it down to the steering shaft/slip yoke.250.00 for a replacement

I have the same creaking, rattling, popping noise, especially when accelerating and turning to the left like when leaving a stoplight. I also notice some high pitched noises coming from that area at highway speeds. They go away if I jag the wheel a little but usually return within a few seconds. i was thinking it sounds like a bearing.

A knocking noise from the driver ft. side.

It is a known problem for the 2005 trucks. All with low miles. I have the same problem and I am not sure how to fix at this point. I think it is coming from a linkage at the front of the truck connected to the steering. (a little finger 4" long at the center underneith

I have an 02 Sierra with exactly the same problem. 215 000 km on it. Makes a noise similar to ABS but intermittently and not constant like ABS. Sounds like coming from the left side, always on left turns but not right turns. Sometimes happens during heavy acceleration, but not under normal city driving. The sound increases in frequency the faster the wheels turn.

I have the same problem with my 2006 Sierra 4x4. Drives me nuts. 70,000 miles and worn outt already. I take care of this truck big time and they told me the steering stabilizer "stuff" needs replacing. I'm going to look into it further. I may do it myself if I know what needs to be replaced.

  • Anonymous Jan 03, 2013

Same here in a 2006 Sierra 4x4 with all the goodies.. I grabbed the steering stabilizer that they said was worn out, at 70,000, and tried moving it with my hand like checking an idler arm on an old truck. The dang bracket flexes.. Even if the system was tight, it still sucks. I hate this tin box of GMC I don\'t abuse it and I take care of it big time. What a money pit just to keep it from falling apart. I thought haveing the tow and off road package would mean it would last longer especially if I didn\'t trash the thing. I\'m going back to owning a Ford..

Front end makes noice when turning while engaged in 4 wheel drive

check front axle shafts cv joints one might be bad. also if you turn on a dry surface when 4x4 engaged it will bind and make noise. Jack front of truck up and try to wiggle wheel up,down all around as you may also have a bad wheel hub bearing that is clunking when turning.

I have a 1997 gmc pickup with 4-wheel drive. The

You probably have blown drive hubs. Do you have to engage the hubs at the wheels? If not and they are automatic locking and they are probably blown or seized into the unlock position. They are not too expensive to replace with manual locking hubs (My Suggestion) but the autolocking hubs are expensive. When you take the caps off the front drive spindles and try running it again you may see the axle turning inside but not the wheel. That is the best test. Wish you luck!!

How do you replace left front unitized bearing on 2000 gmc sierra 1/2 ton pickup

You have to remove the wheel and the brake caliper. If it has antilock brakes disconnect the antilock break sensor wire up by the frame and get the wire free form the holders. Remove the big nut on the end of the axel shaft with a 1-3/8 inch socket, now turn the steering all the way to the left and losen the two bolts behind the hub with good 18MM socket. They are usually very tight be carefull not to round the head of the bolts use a good quality 6 point socket. Turn the bolts out about 6-8 turns and stop now turn the steering all the way to right do the same with the other two bolts. Now, take a air hammer with a punch end in it and hammer on the heads of the bolts, a little at time, on all the bolts, evenly until the hub is loose. If you don't have a air hammer a hammer and punch or drift will work. Then remove the bolts the rest of the way and pull the assembly off. Now you have to drive the wheel studs out and remove the rotor. I just described it on 3/4 ton a 1/2 ton might be easier but the principle is the same, I think there are only 3 bolts holding the hub on and the bolt sizes may differ. Also I think you can pull the rotor right off once caliper is out of the way. Sorry about that.

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 with a v6 and a 5 speed manual Transmisiion. When Shifting from any gear I get a clunk. When in 1st and moving at low speed makes a noise like ball bearings dropping or better...

is your clutch pedal spongy if it is a hydraulic clutch there will be a small resivoir on the fire wall next to the brake master cylinder,if so check the fluid level, the noise your describing sounds like drive shaft u-joints,or cv axle drive shafts in front if its 4 wheel drive, block the wheels and put the truck in neutral,to release any tension on the drive shaft,go underneath, grab the driveshaft a foot behind the transmission, and push up an pull down on it while observing the u-joint in front of it if there is any looseness or play it is damaged, any movement up and down or left and right requires replacement,do the same to the other end at the rear axle, the rear axle u-joint is the most common failure, but check them both,

1990 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.
