2004 pontiac sunfine 0442

I have an 04 sunfire which keeps getting a P0442 code. We have changed the gas cap and checked the tank for corrosion. We have also changed the purge cylenode. When the check engine light does come on I get horrible gas mileage and there is no smell of gas except for it running a little rich. Now my dad is a machanic and we are starting to run out of ideas on what could be the issue, any ideas?

Smoke test the system . P0442 small leak .
This DTC tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a small leak. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor signal to determine the vacuum decay rate. At an appropriate time, the control module turns the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve ON and the EVAP vent solenoid valve ON. This allows the engine to draw a vacuum on the EVAP system. At a calibrated time, or vacuum level, the control module turns the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve OFF, sealing the system, and monitors the FTP sensor input in order to determine the EVAP system vacuum decay. If the control module detects a leak larger than a calibrated amount, this DTC sets.

SOURCE: 2002 pontiac sunfire has check engine light

Your problem is typical for these cars. The throttle position sensor is bad. Go to Auto Zone and have them check the codes to confirm this. i've seen this many times, that's usually the problem. It makes the car feel like the brakes are on. Hope this helps. Let me know. Phil

SOURCE: check gauges light

Possible bad guage, bad wiring, or bad sending unit. Check each one independently of each other, start with wiring first, then sending unit.

Have a scan tool connected , so that you can retreive the diagnostic codes, this will help isolate the problem.
Good luck !

I have a Pontiac torrent 2006 and I receive the ccodes P0442 small leak from and P0771 lean bank1,previously went to dealer they kept saying gas cap. I need help I think its the converter or oxygen sensor...

A p0442 code is solved by replacing the gas cap in most cases, especially if it is the original gas cap. As for the p0771 lean code, there are many issues that can cause this code, O2 sensor, small exhaust leak, spark plug or fuel injector issue, spark issue...the list goes on. This code will need a good understanding with diagnostic procedure and testing and a scan tool would help. You may get lucky with replacing the spark plugs and checking for an exhaust leak and repair the exhaust. A scanner will allow you to see what the engine management components are doing while the engine is running. Keep in mind, it may take several good trips to turn the check engine light off after repairs are made and codes are erased.

I have a 2002 pontiac sunfire and i keep getting a code for the check engine light(p1441)I have a code scanner but it wont tell me what this code means. it say its a manufactures code

code OBD II P0441 states incorrect purge flow.. Check all your vacuum lines at the purge canister and tank too, and check your gas cap to make sure it is on tight. When all else fails, have a local autoparts store scan it with their scanner for free to see what they suggest.

GM Code 442

Do you mean code P0442? I would assume that's what you mean since you said it relates to the Evap System

This code indicates that there is a fuel vapor leak in the system. This means that a very small leak has been detected. The leak can be from a hole as small as 1mm

This code point towards any of the following:
a loose gas cap or a non factory spec gas cap
a small leak or hole in the fuel vapor hose/tube
faulty vent o-ring seal

The most common fixes is to re install the gas cap, clear the codes, and see if the code returns. Or replace the gas cap and clear the codes and see if it returns. Finally inspect the hoses/tubes for cuts/holes

This code in no way points to a canister requiring to be replaced.

Code 0440 2004 sunfire

Hello tiasr06,

The problem is the purge solenoid or the purge vent. I would change both of them and your problem will go away. The purge solenoid is located near the power steering pump and the purge vent is under the car, in the back, behind the gas tank on the driver's side.
