Is there a possibility you erred in reassembly and shorted a wire inside the unit which in turn blew a fuse in the car somewhere?

My heater only works once in awhile

Suspect the most likely problem is air in the system, it needs to be "burped".
Whenever the temperature gauge goes way up, the coolant probably boiled out, and outside air replaced it.
When the radiator gets low, outside air will enter the vacuum created by the missing coolant.
Adding coolant is fine, but there is likely air trapped in the heater. The way to add coolant is to have the engine running with the heater on full blast, and the engine running at medium speed ( about 1,500 RPM). When you do this, the water pump will pump the air out of the heater. Add coolant slowly, and watch the system for about 5 minutes until there are no more air bubbles.
I'd be remiss not to ask you to find out why the temperature gauge went up. That overheating can destroy an engine. I would recommend you check the coolant ( WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND COLD) daily for awhile to see if there is a leak causing your problem.
The auto supply place might even be willing to put a pressure tester on the radiator for free to see if there are any leaks anywhere.

Polo gti battery light wont start

Sounds like your alternator is not working, if you can get the engine running and have access to a volt meter check the voltage on the battery terminals, With the engine running you should see in excess of 13V

Hi i have changed the head gasket on my vw polo and now it is overheating on every journey the fan doesnt seem to come on any ideas what it could be as i have put new temperature sensors and thermostat and...

Hi Marie.

Test if there is voltage to fan motor with engine hot (use a test light or a Voltmeter). If there is 12VDC to fan motor and motor does not turn, then the fan must be replaced. An alternative way to test the fan would be energizing the motor by connecting it to 12VDC. If fan does not run when motor is energized, then the fan is defective.

If fan does not get power fuse, fan relay, thermostat and wiring must be tested. If you have already replaced thermostat, test the rest.

Check the fan fuse first. Most VW use a 30 Amp fuse located in the fuse plate. Refer to the car owners manual for fuse location. Depending on the year of your Polo there is a Coolant Fan Control Relay on the main relay panel. If the relay is good it must power the fan when the engine is hot. Before going for the relay check that two of the relay's contacts are getting power. If there is no power to the relay and fuse is good it means that there is a wiring problem.

Regards.

Ginko

'06 VW Polo cooling fan not working - fuse inside fine - fuse on top of battery (5) blown - put in new one and blown again - need bigger size or what?

Don't put in a bigger size. If it blew once, it means something inside the fan has failed. Take a look for any obvious shorts in the wires: Failing that, Take out the fan, and see if it works. Most likely the short is right at the connector, where it vibrates out the most.

Done head gasket mate put manifolds on now fuel pump diont work no power to pump power at relay starts with blast of fuel no power from compurter to pump

computer doesnt control pump relay on such a old vehicle ,you have a fuse out or old dirty connections on the base of the relay so if all else fails then run a new feed wire to relay depending on which power point on relay has no power ,if its the feed from ignition to operate relay make a new feed from ignition switch and if no power to pump side of relay then run a new feed to this via a fuse .simple to sort out on such an old vehicle

Hi ,
It sounds like you lost the belt that runs the power steering pump and the water pump and the alternator. Look under the hood at that belt.
